Lets talk Anti-Virus
programs. Let me see a show of hands from those of you who pay for
an Anti-Virus program. Just as I thought, about half. Most popular
paid Anti-Virus programs do a very good job of cleaning and
protecting your computer, especially if you have a teenager in the
family. But, there is a cost not only financially but also speed
and performance of the computer. For the past three years I have
used the free program from Microsoft called Security Essentials. I
have not noticed any degradation in performance, after all they have
the codes for the operating system. Norton and McAfee will slow the
performance of the computer by 15 - 20% and may cause unintended
problems because those programs are deeply imbedded in all parts of
the operating systems and programs. I go to a lot of strange places
on the web and have not had a virus in many years. But, I don't
have a teenager in the house. Search for "Microsoft Security
Essentials English" and you should land on the correct Microsoft web
page. If you really want to pay for one, use Nod 32 from ESET.
Remember Windows 8 has an antivirus built-in. There is no need to
add on with Windows 8. Mac - so far, so good. No viruses in the
wild for a Mac. Nothing in the Android systems (phones or tablets)
or IOS devices (Ipad, Iphone, etc).
USB 3.0 is the latest protocol for Universal Serial Bus
cables. Those are the cables that most commonly attach external
devices to the computer. You can tell if it's 3.0 capable by the
little blue tab in the connector. In order for you to get the
optimal speed from USB 3.0 you must have a port in the computer that
has the blue tab as well. Any extension cable must be compatible as
well. I use that system to back up "My Documents" and "My Photos".
It takes just seconds with 3.0. I was going to remind you to back
up your data but you already guessed that.
Code named "Blue". That's the very strong rumor from
Microsoft. Windows 8.1 (code named "Blue") will be released late
summer and we will finally have our "classic start" circle and all
