Earth Day – Many
thanks to all the enthusiastic volunteers who helped pick up
litter today. We hauled away 1 overflowing dump truck + 2 full
pick up’s. Our non-profit organization UVERDE, A.C. continues to
work with the local Schools, Grades 1-12 to raise awareness and
reinforce the No Littering policy, plus begin the necessary
practice of recycling
within the schools. We are also working with
the Delegado and local venders/ home owners on the side of the
highway to help maintain a cleaner entrance to Los Barriles. Two
steps forward, three steps back. Perseverance and patience are
key. Regarding the litter problem, another common observation is
around the construction debris deposited in the arroyos and all
the litter that is blown around during construction from job
sites. The simple practice our company has adopted on all our
job sites is to provide a garbage can with lid for all the daily
garbage (left overnight in a fenced in area
so the cows and dogs do not knock it over) and train our workers
to only deposit heavy rubble in the pile. Anything that can fly
away does not go in the rubble pile. Both are removed regularly
from the job sites.
We also only work with dump truck operators who
deposit the garbage and rubble in the designated land fill – not
the arroyos
or elsewhere and we confirm this fact on a regular
basis. I would like to invite new land owners and homeowners to
encourage this practice with your contractors. As clients, you
have the power to influence your local contractor, workers and
dump truck operators to maintain a cleaner environment during
construction and after. If we all work together to raise
awareness, soon all we will see is the beauty that surrounds us.
Gandhi said, “You must be the change you wish to see in the
world.” That is what we are doing.
