It is with much sadness but fond memories that we share word that Keith Davis passed away in Quesnal, B.C. yesterday.  He had enjoyed so much his home and many amigos here in La Ribera with his wife, Darlene.  We will remember his quick wit, wonderful smile and willingness to help any of his friends with any project they might have.

BAJA NIGHT SKY -- Wednesday, Feb 6: The International Space Station makes 10 passes over Baja Sur this week. The brightest, and most likely pass to have clear skies is on Thursday evening. The ISS will rise in the SW around 6:28pm heading NE. It will pass near Jupiter and Capella before entering Earth's shadow about 6:34pm. For other passes, check www.heavens-above.com using your latitude and longitude, or download ISS Detector app for Android devices. On Thursday and Friday at dusk, Mercury and Mars will be next to each other low in the SW sky half an hour after sunset. Mercury is the brighter of the two. It is moving away from the sun for a week, so this is the week to catch it before it heads back into the sun's glare. Binoculars will make them a more interesting sight. Most weather/astronomy web sites  say the sun sets around 6:08pm around the East Cape this week. But if you have mountains to your west, sunset can be 20 to 40 minutes earlier. New moon is on Sunday and brings with it several days of extra high tides. If you can see the 18-hour-old new moon Monday evening 20-30 minutes after sunset, you might go into the record books and qualify as an astronomy nerd. Check Monday's edition for a Tuesday evening sky event involving the moon you don't want to miss. Can you navigate by the moon or Milky Way? Scientists in South Africa have recently found that dung beetles there, on clear nights, use the moon or Milky Way to head in a straight line from a dung pile party to their nest. Can you find your way back to your nest at night by the stars? Tom S.

a.  Ever wished you did not have to make the trip down to the airport to pick up friends and relatives who come in those late flight or leave on the early morning flights?  Here is a solution: Book a room at the Best Western Aeropuerto. Free shuttle to and from the airport.  Rooms have comfortable beds. There is a Restaurant and bar that serves excellent food.  Reasonably priced at $70 for a double room.  Telephone 01 624 146 5252 or 01 800 841 0743. Friends stayed there last week and highly
recommend. Next time you are at the airport stop by and check it out.

a.  Would like to borrow someone's dog carrier (dog is 10lbs, so doesn't need to be big) for one week, to travel to mainland Mexico and back. Needs to be a hard (plastic) carrier w/ ventilation, suitable for airplane.
