One of our La Ribera dogs has found a forever home in
Calgary or Vancouver, Canada. What he needs now is a nice
person or persons to escort him up to meet his new family.
His foster mom will transport him to the airport with all of
the paperwork in hand and will be there with you while
you check in, and will stay with "Duke" until he is loaded
on the plane. The people from the animal rescue group will
meet you at the airport in Calgary. It is a very simple

I wanted to make our neighbors in East Cape aware that
we were burglarized some time between June 2012 and
January 2, 2013. A Foster 6'x6' Commercial Walk-In
Freezer was stolen from our main building in Spa Buena
Vista and the thieves spent diligent time with power
tools to dismantle the freezer panel by panel. Along
with the freezer they stole the condensing unit that was
to operate the freezer. We have filed a police report so
we would appreciate information if anyone is aware of a
commercial freezer being sold or obtained by anyone in
the area. I have enclosed a picture of a freezer
identical to the one stolen.
These thieves took time and premeditated action on this
burglary so please contact us at

BAJA NIGHT SKY -- Saturday,
February 16: The only cloud in the sky last Monday evening,
when the crescent Moon, Mercury, and Mars were setting together,
was a black cloud covering the two planets. If it is clear after
sunset, Mercury will be easier to find for several nights now
as it reaches greatest eastern elongation tonight, about 18
degrees east, or an hour and 12 minutes behind the setting sun.
Then it heads back west and will pass between us and the sun on
its way to becoming the "morning star" in a few weeks. Look for
it about 50 minutes after sunset, starting about 6:35pm. I
needed binoculars to find it last night, but many people spot it
unassisted. Mercury is the closest planet to the
sun, and spends much of its time hidden in the sun's glare. It
takes Mercury 88 days to orbit the sun. In the meantime, Earth
has traveled millions of miles, and Mercury needs another 28
days, a total of 116, to catch up and reach the same position in
the sky as seen from Earth. So from our viewpoint, Mercury
makes 3 and a fraction more trips around the sun each year, or
almost exactly 22 every 7 years. Every year there will be three
times when Mercury is the evening star for a couple of weeks,
and three times when it is the morning star, and each time there
is only an hour or so after sunset, or before sunrise when the
planet is visible. Even then, clouds, city lights, and
obstructed horizons may block the planet from view. So unless
one makes plans to see Mercury, chances are they never
will. This information about Mercury was recorded by the Mayans
in the Dresden Codex more than 800 years ago. In modern times,
it was a calculation about Mercury's orbit using Einstein's
theory, the first calculation to agree closely with
observation, that gave physicists confidence that the General
Theory of Relativity was correct. Tom S.

Barchi can paint anything find a picture in a magazine or art book
and have him copy.......He is located across from the Los Barriles
Hotel next door to the old Tortilla stand....

Re: cell phones in Baja: We carry our Verizon and it works in
most populated areas; dunno about Los Barriles. It’s phone specific
also, so check with Verizon regarding your specific phone. We
normally pay the $0.69/minute (?) since the added $25/month (?)
doesn’t result in economies for our limited use.
2) cash, ATMs et al
It’s best to pay with pesos, as you’re sure to get the right rate of
exchange. There have been reports of ATM at markets that have been
compromised, to take your confidential info, but it’s not happened
to us. If we have the choice, we go to a bank for the withdrawal;
we withdraw MXN$5000 at a time (ca. USD$400). The place to be
cautious is at the Pemex gas stations. This is particularly true of
the Pemex on the west side of the hwy, immediately south of the main
road into Santa Rosalia. Always pay in cash, not credit card, and
watch the meter before and after delivery. And tell the attendant
how much you’re handing him; try to give him close the the exact
amount. If a problem arises, address it immediately. The Sta
Rosalia Pemex made an error, but I caught it and he corrected the
amount.

Jimmy and I got new glasses at Costco and were very pleased. The
exam was professional, the prices good and there was a good
selection of frames. However, several months later one of my lenses
was damaged so I took the glasses back to be fixed, cost free I
hoped since there is a guarantee. I am happy to say that Costco
honored the guarantee. It took a little longer and a little urging
but I have my glasses back gratis. Chris White
