BAJA NIGHT SKY--Wednesday: Between
8 and 10pm tonight, the moon, and the two brightest
stars in Earth's night sky, Sirius and Canopus, will be
lined up in the south, more or less equally spaced. Jupiter
and the moon will be near the zenith, Sirius under the moon
by 4 fists, and Canopus below Sirius by another 4 fists
near the horizon. This is a sight you will never see north
of latitude 37 degrees, or towns such as Santa Cruz, Ca.,
Durango, Co., or Wichita, Kansas. Congratulations to all
those who reported they spotted Mercury for the first time
ever. Now try finding Venus, the morning star, between 6:35
and 6:45am, low in the east to the south of Punta Arena.
Binoculars will be helpful. The Russian Meteoroid
was photographed from above as it entered our atmosphere by
a European Weather Satellite. You can watch it here:

Rainbows: A rare meteorological phenomenon, where high
clouds containing ice crystals turn all the colors of the
rainbow, has happened several times over El Sargento the
past few days. If you notice whispy cirrus clouds covering
the sun between 10am and 2pm, shade your eyes from the sun
to check the clouds for a rainbow of colors. Tom S.
