BAJA NIGHT SKY--Week of Feb. 24: Jupiter and the Moon continue to dominate the Baja night sky.  Venus, Mercury, and Mars will soon be lost in the glare of the rising or setting sun.  After midnight, you can spot Saturn in the southeast sky. By now you are probably familiar with Sirius and Canopus, the brightest and second brightest stars  in the night sky, and the constellation Orion enclosed in the Winter Circle of bright stars high in the southern sky.  False Cross: If you look low in the south at 11pm,  just below and to the east of Canopus, you will see a cross. But this one is not standing upright. It is part of the constellation Carina, the Keel, but since it is often confused with the Southern Cross, it is called the False Cross.  Every two weeks the stars of the night sky rise one hour earlier. If you didn't wake to look for the Southern Cross low in the south at 3:30am two weeks ago, you will now have to get up at 2:30am.  The eastern night sky not only rises an hour earlier every two weeks, the southern sky slowly rises and falls enough to notice every 1000 years or so.  Athens, Greece is located at about the same latitude as Sacramento, CA., much too far north to currently see the Southern Cross. But  2500 years ago, it was easily visible and commented on by Greek astronomers. In the same era, there was no north star,  just  a black spot in the night sky where earth's axis pointed.  The reason, as you probably know, is that the earth is tilted about 23 degrees on its axis causing it to wobble slowly like a top. One loop of this wobble, known at precession, takes 26,000 years. When we are tilted toward the Southern Cross, it is high in the sky, when tilted away it is low. We get a different view of the sky from different points along this wobble.  Two thousand five hundred years ago, Baja Indians had no North Star to guide them, but the Southern Cross was easy to spot when it was high in the southern sky. The Big Dipper,  part of the constellation Ursa Major, is presently hanging by its bowl in the northeastern sky around 8pm.  Its last two bowl stars point west at the current  North Star. During the night, it will move counterclockwise to go above the pole star, and then by 5am in the morning, it will be hanging by its handle in the northwest sky,  pointing east at the pole star.  You don't need to understand celestial navigation to use the pole star to check your latitude.  Check its altitude above the horizon with your fist. In the Cape Region you should measure about two fists and one to two fingers or 23 to 24 degrees, our latitude here.  Full Moon will be on Monday, February 25, and will rise about 6:34am.  Expect extra high morning tides for several days. The Secret X-37B  unmanned replacement for the Space Shuttle will pass overhead on Monday evening. It will rise in the SW around 7:16pm heading NE as it passes between Jupiter and  Orion headed for Castor and Pollux.  It is not as bright as the ISS, but sharp eyes should spot it. The ISS  will pass overhead on Wednesday, Feb. 27. It will rise in the NW around  7:29pm,  pass above the Winter Circle, and enter Earth's shadow around 7:32pm near Castor and Pollux  in the NE. Nicholas Copernicus was born 543 years ago this past week. He turned the world of dogmatic ideas on its head, or at least moved it from the center of the universe when his observations convinced other scientists that the earth,  moon, and 5 visible planets all revolved about the sun. The commonly sanctioned view was that everything revolved about the Earth,  all attached to crystalline  spheres,  behind which was the domain of God. Ask 100 people  about this and you will find some of them did not get the message.     Tom S.

a.  More on the IPhone "fix"
     My problem was that my phone kept switching from Telcel to Movistar or Iusacell@NextG..something. My carrier in the US is AT&T which is only compatible with Telcel.
     The first "fix" is to go to settings and select "carriers" which should be 3 down from "airplane mode." If it appears, select carriers, deselect "auto" and the phone will search for other carriers. Select Telcel. In my case, the "carriers" option was not there, or was there only occasionally, but selecting Telcel did not work.
     Contact AT&T, international support 9168434685 and tell them to send the file to your phone to provide the ability to choose carriers.
If this file is working, do the above and then a "hard reset," and it should work
     It took me numerous calls to AT&T intl. Some said I could not choose a carrier, others said there was a problem with Telcel, but eventually, I was able to choose carriers and the phone did not switch.
     However, today, I was having problems with my phone dialing out using my contacts. I again contacted AT&T who gave me the song and dance that it was a problem with Telcel, but finally, after speaking with Apple again, I turned off "Dial Assist" located in the settings- phone and everything seems to be working, but THERE SEEMS TO BE A PROBLEM WITH TELCEL as well.
