BAJA NIGHT SKIES - - There were several
astronomical events the past few weeks that did not require clear
night skies to appreciate. On Wednesday, January 2, we reached
perihelion, our closest approach to the sun, about 91 million miles,
3 million miles closer than the maximum distance reached around July
2 We are also traveling faster when we are closer to the sun and
this causes the seasons to get a little out of whack with the
calendar. Since we are moving faster and traveling farther when the
northern hemisphere is tilted away from the sun, our winter is about
5 days shorter, and summer 5 days longer, than the corresponding
seasons in the Southern Hemisphere. We are now having our latest
sunrises of the year around 7:05am, and in another week, sunrises
will occur earlier and sunsets later as days begin to lengthen at a
faster pace. The constellation Orion, and the planet
Jupiter will dominate the night sky for several more months.
Around 7pm, Orion's belt points to the spot on the horizon where
Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky, will rise just after
7pm. As the light from this star passes thru the thick lower layers
of atmosphere, it will twinkle slowly and change colors. When Sirius
is higher in the sky, its light passes through a thinner layer of
air and it twinkles faster until the colors blend into a steadier
white light. A bright Iridium Flare will flash briefly
tonight (Wednesday) at 7:05:10pm directly in the south about 30
degrees (3 fists) above the horizon (9 seconds later and not as
bright in LB). Thursday morning at 6am, a thin crescent Moon and
brightly shining Venus will rise next to each other in the east.
If it is clear with dark skies, you should be able to spot the
Southern Cross standing upright very low due south between 5
and 6am. You cannot see this tiny constellation from most locations
north of Mexico. The International Space Station will also
grace the skies Thursday morning, rising in the southwest sky around
5:58am. As it heads northeast, it will brighten as it passes high
overhead, then pass through the last star in the bowl of the Big
Dipper before entering earth's shadow a few minutes later. The
ISS is the largest international scientific endeavor ever carried
out. The first international scientific expedition, measuring the
transit time of Venus across the face of the sun in order to
determine the distance to the sun, occurred from 1761 to 1769.
Among hundreds participants, astronomers from France, Spain, and
Mexico set up observatories in San Jose Del Cabo and Santa Ana for
the 1769 transit. The observations by the Mexican, Velaquez,
corrected a 3 mile error -- 3 miles to far west -- of Baja's
longitude. Unfortunately, most of the European team died of a
tropical fever. Velaquez returned to Mexico city by way of boat
from Bahia de La Ventana.
