BAJA NIGHT SKIES -- week of January
20: The moon is closing in on Jupiter for
their closest encounter, a moon-Jupiter conjunction, until
2026; on Monday the 21st, around 9pm, the two brightest
objects in the night's sky will be within a moon's width of
each other for a few hours. Does this conjunction portend
good or bad news for Baja dwellers? Well, actually
neither. The two bodies are not even close. They just happen
to line up nicely for a spectactular view from Earth. Don't
miss it. On Wednesday
evening, the moon will be close to the center of the
Winter Circle/Hexagon formed by the bright stars
Aldebaran, Rigel, Sirius, Procyon, Pollux and Capella.
From the moon, look for Capella at the
one o'clock position on the circle. It is the 6th
brightest star in our night sky. But it has a secret only
detected by spectographic observation: it is actually two
stars, closer to each other than we are to the sun, orbiting
each other every 104 days. The stars of Capella are the same
color or spectral type as our sun, but have diameters about
10 times larger. Light from the sun reaches us in 8 minutes;
light from Capella A and B takes 42 years.
Full Moon occurs on Saturday, January 26, rising at
6pm, or a minute or so later from behind Isla Cerralvo.
Satellite Passes: Each evening between 6 and 9pm, 40 to
50 visible artificial satellites pass over Baja Sur. If you
watch the sky for a short time between these hours, you will
likely spot a few. The International Space Station
makes its next bright pass on February 4. In the meantime,
if you want to see what goes on inside the ISS as it passes
overhead, astronaut Sunita Williams gives a fascinating 25
minute tour of the facilities at http://www.wimp.com/orbitaltour/
<http://www.wimp.com/orbitaltour/> With
the slow internet streaming in La Ventana and El Sargento,
early mornings are the best time to view Sunita's
presentation. Good News: The average coldest day of
the year is January 21; warmer weather and clearer
skies are on the way. Tom S.

2013 Amistad Award
Announcing the 2013 Rotary Club of Los Barriles
Cabo Este Amistad Award winners.
This year we have chosen two extremely deserving
residents of our community. This year’s winners
are Charlene Wenger and Francis
Olachea Carrillo . The awards were based
upon over 80 submissions from the community.
They were then reviewed by our Rotary Committee,
the Rotary Board of Directors and the selection
made. The awards presentation and dinner will be
on March 30th (more details to follow).
Charlene Wenger,
Char as she is most often known, has been the
driving force in bringing quality medical care
to the East Cape. Lynda Wise wrote: Char has
saved so many lives here on the East Cape. She
works around the clock selflessly in many
situations where a patient is in a live & death
situation. She is the most helpful,
knowledgeable & caring person I know who is
involved in the medical profession. She is truly
a rare gem who deserves to receive all of the
accolades that can be bestowed on her.
Ivan Kaiser wrote:
Char has been instrumental in starting a Health
Care Clinic in Los Barriles, which has helped
Gringos and Mexicans alike. She has personally
assisted many people in the community with
emergency healthcare. She started a successfully
running dental clinic, and extended these
services for Mexican children in the community
who would not otherwise ever get any dental work
done. Without Char, we would never have the
healthcare we have today, in Los Barriles and
the East Cape. Now, she has initiated a Diabetic
screening program, targeting the Mexican
community. Few could go through the red tape and
accomplish what Char has done for our community.
Congratulations Char.
Francis Olachea Carrillo
is being honored for her outstanding work for
children’s programs in our community. A member
of the East Guild since its inception, Francis
has worked closely with the high schools to
manage the scholarship funds for qualified
students. Several years ago Francis also saw a
need for summer activities for elementary
students. She single-handedly secured funding,
equipment, meeting places and transportation to
organize a summer recreation program.
Jill Borggreve
submitted: Francis is one of our community's
unsung heroes. Many of the Gringos only know
her for her accounting business, but besides
holding down a full time job she has done so
much for the local school children. Francis is
the force behind the summer school classes held
every summer in which the students are enriched
with classes in English, crafts, exercise, art,
music, sports and other subjects. This is
entirely run by volunteers and Francis is the
one who organizes and coordinates the whole
thing.
She also is a
founding member of the East Cape Guild and every
year organizes the Scholarship Award Ceremony.
This includes scheduling all the performers,
inviting the political and school dignitaries,
as well as answering a million questions from
students and their parents. She also is
instrumental in seeing that the schools are paid
for each student who wins a scholarship.
Our community is
improved by each of these activities and
enriched by the experiences of all the students
she helps.
Tickets will shortly
be available for the evening celebration. For
more information contact Barbara Fowler,
President, Rotary Club of Los Barriles Cabo Este

a. AIRPORT PICK-UP DISCUSSION - New
Terminal #2
1) New Terminal #2 Wheel chair
or disabled passenger: The exit area is restricted to
buses and taxis etc. You can talk to the supervisor of security and
he can give you permission to pick them up in front. Also you
can park in the old Alaska terminal which was designated "terminal
2" and get your people from there. It's still a bit of a walk but
then again, there are a lot of US terminals with longer walks.
I am trying to find out if the path between the terminals has a
bunch of stairs or ramps or what. I'll update you when I find out.
