A big THANK YOU to all of the Volunteers that
made the Catholic Church Rummage Sale possible this year. This sale
could not have happened without you, Jamie and Marcos for donating
the space and also allowing the sale to be held at Plaza del
Pueblo. I would be remiss if I didn't mention the ongoing patience
of The Lighthouse Pizza staff for allowing us to use their sombra
for a sale location. We are a very giving community and the
cooperation of everyone made this sale possible and 11,575 pesos is
the product of all the hard work. Sefi

NIGHT SKIES --Week of January 28, 2013:Wednesday, when the
moon was at the center of the Winter Hexagon, we identified 10
nearby stars that are among the 20 brightest in the night sky.Where
are the other 10 brightest: Some are presently hidden from
view in the daytime sky.But if you are awake at 5am, go outside
and you can spot at least 8 more of the top 20 along with the
ringed plant Saturn. Facing south between 4:30 and 5:30am, 15th
brightestAntares is the giant red star beating
at the heart of Scorpio low in the southeast.Saturn is above and
to the right of Antares. Below Saturn, just above the southern
horizon, are the bright stars Alpha and Beta Centauri
in 3rd and 11th place. Alpha Centauri is the closest naked eye
star to our sun at 4.3 light years. These two stars point to the
Southern Cross just to their right, and the top of the Cross,
Acrux, is the 12th brightest star.High above the cross
is Spica, number 16. The 4th and 5th brightest
stars are in the Northern sky these mornings. The Big Dipper
hangs upside down high in the northern sky, the last two bowl
stars pointing down at Polaris, the North Star. Follow the arc
of the dipper's handle to bright 4th place Arcturus
high in the sky. Low in the NE sky is 5th placeVega.
Absolute Brightness: Since these stars vary in distance
from Earth, we only observe their apparent brightness. If we
were to place all the visible stars at the same distance, 10
parseces, or about 32.6 light years from Earth, almost the
distance to Arcturus, our Sun would barely be visible in the
night sky. The winners would be Rigel and Betelguese in Orion
when brought in from 1400 light years to 32.6 light years. They
would both outshine Venus and often be visible during the
daytime. Venus: By 6:15am, you should be able to see
Venus glowing low in the Southeast sky; it disappears quickly in
the dawn's early light. Mars sets soon after sunset in
the southwest sky while Jupiter is high in the
east after susnet. The Winter Hexagon with Orion
standing upright inside is high in the south between 9
and 11pm. The two brightest stars in the night sky,
Sirius and Canopus, are slmost exactl in the south at
10pm. Look for the brightest, Sirius, about
half way from horizon to zenith. Almost directly beneath it, low
in the south, you should spot Canopus, the
second brightest star in the night sky. Iridium Flares:
Los Cabos and Las Barriles areas will have bright
flares 45 degrees above the NNWhorizon at 5:42:58am and
5:43:13am, respectively, on Monday morning, January 28. If you
are awake in La Ventana/El Sargento at 5:37:28am on Tuesday,
January 29, there will be the brightest flare of the year about
half-way from the NNWhorizon to the zenith. Tom S

THUMBS UP - ANSWERS -
DISCUSSIONS-
This category must have name & email address.
a. A special thank you to all of the
people of the Las Brisas area who donated funds to pay for the
materials needed to fill the holes on the paved road to El Cardinal.
Thank you to the citizens who stopped to donate funds while we were
working on the road.
Most of all, a big thank you to these folks who volunteered their
time: Rigo of Rigo Lucera Construction and his son, Moy. Charis
Cota, Rigo Medina Mytoy
These folks worked hard from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday,
January 26th to fill these bad holes with gravel, tacking oil and
black top. The holes and dangerous wash outs are now filled the best
we could fill them from the little store Las Iguanas up to Elephant
Tree Road. When the holes settle down there will be a re-packing of
the black top. I believe you will not have to be dodging pot holes
or wash outs now that were harming your vehicles. Thanks again to
those of you who contributed to this project. Mike Kerr
b. Baja One Answer:
Thanks to all who responded to my query: places to sleep and eat
while driving the length of the peninsula. The answers for hotels
were: Ensenada - Corona, El Rey Sol & ElCid; San Quintin -
Jardines Baja; El Rosario - Baja Cactus; Guerro Negro - Malarimos;
San Ignacio - Ignacio Springs B & B; Santa Rosalia - El Morro as
well as some others there and also for Loreto and Ciudad
Constitution. It is very nice to have suggestions from you all;
I'm sure I will have other requests for advice as we get closer to
traveling. Eleanor
c. "Have you noticed how clean and
litter-free the street-sides, arroyos, and beach is lately?
We have two 'Super Daves' in the East Cape RV Park that have
diligently gone out for several days and literally have picked
up/plucked out of thorny brush (they've got the war-wounds to show
for it), mucho, mucho garbage and debris that has been carelessly
discarded. Super accolades to them for their fantastic volunteer
efforts. Their hope is that the community will be encouraged to
'get on board' and take part in keeping the beautiful village of
Los Barriles even more charming than it already is."

b. Slow Set
Circuit Training for Strong Bones Annalisa is
leading a new and different type of bone building
/strength training class at the Yoga Center on
Tuesdays and Fridays. We are using the Super
Slow approach to building muscle This method
incorporates very slow repetition speeds as compared
to traditional resistance training methods, with
emphasis on minimizing acceleration to reduce the
force the body is exposed to during exercise and
improve muscular loading. Super Slow workouts
typically consist of one set of each exercise
carried out to complete muscle fatigue. This
approach to building strength is appropriate for any
fitness level because you will be lifting relatively
light weights (about 6 to 10 pounds ) , but lifting
them so slowly that you will go to muscle fatigue
within a muscle AND strengthening bones. If you
have osteopenia, strength training twice a week is a
must! No prior experience necessary.
