A celebratory groom and his friends were on
board ‘Awesome’ last Thursday after the wedding of the daughter of a
Los Barriles homeowner. Hunting for tuna, Captain Luis took them
north and east when the hunt produced a school of dolphin
and ‘Awesome’ made chase. The lures had barely been set when WHAM
the rods doubled over with a double hook up of 100 pound tuna! The
fight was on when after just minutes the terms of the fight changed
and the tuna, instead of fighting the lines were heading straight
for the boat. The water started erupting and within shouting
distance of the transom a school of Pilot Whales were in hot pursuit
of the caught tuna. Pilot whales the size of Orcas, tuna to die for,
fishing lines straining, the water churned up like a Class V white
water river and all in a great feat of fighting. Neptune ruled the
fight and the Pilot Whales took control, finishing off the 100 pound
tunas like they were fileted sashimi and allowed just the heads to
be brought into the boat! The water running blood red and the lines
were tossed back out in hopes of ’Awesome’ winning the next battle.
One line caught and snapped - Pilot Whale 1, Awesome 0. Another line
taught and cranking like mad on the reel, Captain Luis had Deckhand
Luis help hand line the lead heavy fish into the boat to level the
playing field. Good strategy and the scored finished Whales - 3,
Awesome - 1, with a 100# tuna bloodying the decks. Although common
to see Pilot Whales, Captain Luis was impressed with their hot
pursuit and attack as it has been seen very few times in his 30 year
career!
