Shaw Direct Satellite TV Accounts Outside Of
Canada - Within the last few weeks, Shaw sent their Canadian
Retailers a notice that they have tightened their requirements for
non-Canada / Home Away From Home (HAFH) accounts, and that Retailers
who knowingly assist in setting up new accounts for non
Canadian-based customers may lose their distribution rights.
Retailers may still be able to help with setting up new accounts for
people who have a bona fide Canadian address, depending on where the
address is located. I was also informed the HAFH option will now
cost an additional $75 per month.
This does not mean Shaw is realigning their satellites or
discontinuing signal coverage. I want to emphasize this since
there's quite a bit of misinformation floating around the Internet
right now about this issue. This is a policy change affecting new
accounts and existing HAFH accounts, and NOT a technical change
affecting signal availability from Shaw's two main satellites. Shaw
will not be "realigning" their satellite signal, nor are they able
to detect where a receiver is located unless a subscriber connects
it to a phone line with a non Canadian number capable of dialing
into the Shaw telephone system (for example, a Vonage phone with a
US-based telephone number).
But Shaw may terminate existing accounts if they suspect the
receivers are in the US or Mexico. All non Canadian-based Shaw
customers are advised that they should keep their account billing
current with no lapses, and not say or do anything that would cause
Shaw to disconnect them. They should not call Shaw Direct, ask
questions about service in Mexico, connect a telephone line, try to
add additional receivers, or "share" accounts with others. Anything
suspicious can get an account shut down, and the receivers
