Repeat: Missing 10.5 M Liquid Force
kite
Last weekend while kiteboarding in El Cardonal,
my 10.5 meter Liquid Force Envy went south toward Los Barilles
without me. Very quickly, both releases 'released' and my kite has
ended up in a 'God only knows' locale last I saw it was outside of
Algandones. If anyone sees the kite, or hears about its whereabouts,
please let me know ASAP - I'm paying a reward to whomever can help
me locate it. Jeff Tweddale at +1-707-874-3922 ext. 203 and

Saturday, 8am-10am, I would like a
few of you to bring flowers from your yard so I can decorate for
Mengia's Birthday/Celebration of Life. Mengia's day will begin at
1pm on the beach and/or patio. Please, no flowers are to be placed
in the water. When Henry and family return from Awesome we will
have snacks, drinks, stories and laughs as we all reminisce about
our wonderful friend. Henry would also like to invite anyone who
wants to join him on the water with kayaks or SUP boards. Then
that evening, Flatdog will be dedicating their performance at Otra
Vez to Mengia so please join in and come out for a fun evening of
great music. Cheryl 141-0308

Hola Foodies, Chefs and
Cooks - Buen Provecho La Paz cooking school will be closing for this
season in mid-March (returning in the fall). But before the girls
head north, I asked Denise and Renee if they would offer a bread
making class. They said yes, and are giving the want-to-be
panaderos from Los Barriles first opportunity to sign up. The
class is on Saturday March 9, 10:30 - 4:30, $925ps per person.
Denise owned and operated a wholesale bakery in Sonoma California
for 20 years, so she will have us baking baguettes in no time.
Minimum of 8 people and up to 16 is needed for the class. I will
arrange to have Octavio drive us to La Paz and return us to Los
Barriles which will cost $20US per person. Please contact me ASAP if
you are interested. Holly Burgin

Today we witnessed a large
plume of black smoke on the "road to nowhere" up the mountainside
and later drove up to see what had happened. We found this still
smoldering wreck of a car. There was a stream of fuel along the road
as well as evidence of melting metal so it looked like the driver
noticed the fire, stopped the car and jumped out in time. Hope the
person is okay. Here are some photos of the vehicle.

Awesome! Wow! What a
community! February’s Recycling Volunteers ROCKED! We had 25
volunteers that made it so fun and we managed the largest recycle
day ever, receiving 1/3 more than any previous day. Thank you to
those who helped and to those that brought recyclables. Remember
THIS THURSDAY is March Recycle day and we need volunteers and hope
to surpass February’s collections. Please contact Lynn Mirassou at

Baja Night
Sky-Week of March 3, 2013:
Jupiter
is overhead
in a moonless sky at 7pm.
The other planets are lost
in the glare of the sun. If
you are up between 4:30am
and 5:30am for the next two
weeks of dark skies, you can
catch the curving tail and
stinger, red beating heart,
and upper body and head of
the constellation Scorpius
pointing right at the planet
Saturn. Look towards the SE
sky. It is one constellation
that looks like the thing it
represents. Back north of
the border won't see this
sight. If you still
haven't seen an Iridium
Flare, there will be one
Tuesday evening at
7:59:23pm, and another
Wednesday evening at
7:55:18pm. Times are for El
Sargento and La Paz. At the
latitude of Los Barriles,
add 11 seconds, and at Cabo
add 22 seconds. Both are
about half way to the zenith
in the SSE sky--that's half
way from SE to S. There
are 88 modern constellations
recognized by the
International Union of
Astronomers, including
around 48 groupings of stars
described by the ancient
Greeks. Most of the newer
ones can only be seen from
the Southern Hemisphere.
There are many asterisms,
easily recognized patterns
of stars, such as the
Southern Cross and the Big
Dipper, that are a part of
one or more constellations.
Many asterisms have
geometric shapes that
probably inspired ideas we
all learned in geometry. One
of those is the large
Winter Triangle with
stars from three different
constellations. This week,
between 8pm and 10pm, when
you are facing south, the
Winter Triangle is high in
the sky, Its bottom star is
Sirius, brightest star--not
planet--in the sky. It's
just below the constellation
Orion. To the upper left of
Sirius is Procyon, a corner
of the Winter Hexagon
asterism. To the upper right
of Sirius find Betelgeuse,
the red star at the right
shoulder of Orion (left
facing Orion). In your
mind's eye, connect straight
lines from Sirius to Procyon
to Betelgeuse and back to
Sirius. That's the Winter
Triangle, an almost perfect
equilateral triangle.
Remember her? Equal sides
imply equal angles, and an
altitude to any side creates
two 30-60 right triangles
with hypotenuse twice aslong
as shortest side. I'm
sorry, I was a teacher. Some
other asterisms are kites,
sails, teapots, DNA strands,
fish hooks, and squares. Go
out some night and find
yourself an asterism of your
own. Tom S.

QUESTIONS
- Please share your answers

a.
Can anyone recommend a good
dermatologist in La Paz. Preferably English speaking.
Thanks,
mattersnots@gmail.com
b. Does anyone have the David Baldacci
book the First Family from 2009? and if you do would you loan it
to me to read?
sunsetmorghan@yahoo.com or 124-8071
c, My Amex travel recommends getting
cheap short-notice fares (e.g $75 as against $210 to SFO) by
going to a local MX travel agent. Has anyone noticed this? If
so, what local agency have you dealt with successfully? Thx!

d. CELL PHONE PLAN QUESTION. We are
moving to Los Barriles this summer for a year or 2. Our Verizon
contract is about to expire and we’re thinking of signing a new
one with AT&T but is Telmex/Telcel a viable option for
smartphones? Are rates reasonable for calls to the US? Can you
use your Mexican phone in the US when you are there visiting?
Do they require a long term contract? Thanks! Irene and Bob

e. Discussion - Car Rental
Insurance: In answer to the article
regarding rental of vehicles and insurance; what the author
forgot to mention is the following: First of all, in México if
one uses his credit card insurance, one will be charged for the
damages at the time the vehicle is returned. The claim to the
insurance company will be the responsibility of the person who
rented the vehicle. Second of all, in Mexico when one has an
accident one is arrested, brought to the police station or the
hospital if there is a need, the insurance adjuster will be
requested to come and evaluate the damages, whoever is guilty
will be required to pay the damages or put in jail. Third of
all, in Mexico if one causes death by accident one is
automatically charged having done an homicide, (Article 254 to
260 of the Penal Code of B.C.S.). If
the driver who caused the accident has insurance one can
negotiate through the insurance a settlement so as to get a
pardon from the family… If one does not one would have to have
the financial means to do this… Thus, the necessity to buy full
coverage when one drives a rental or private car in Mexico. Lic.
