3-15-13 at 2PM will be the first 'Care and
Share' info meeting for people that have food allergies &
sensitivities. Please RSVP so that I set up enough chairs and
space for this. Bring your special recipe and if you have
something you can make so that people can taste it, that would
be wonderful. Vegan and non gluten items can taste very good.
Also, most important please share your experiences and how you
satisfy your nutritional needs. Anyone that owns a business
related to this is also welcome to share what they have in their
stores for these restricted food needs.

Baja Night Sky - Week of March 10, 2013 - Year of the Comet:
Comet 2011 L4 Pan-STARRS, named after the asteroid-hunting Panoramic
Survey Telescope & Rapid Response System in Hawaii that discovered
it, will be visiting the northern mid-latitudes from March 7 to
around March 20. The Cape Region is half in and half out of the
mid-latitudes, the Tropic of Cancer extending eastward from Todos
Santos to Cabo Pulmo being the dividing line. This is where the sun
is directly overhead at noon on the Summer Solstice, the longest day
of the year. We should know by Monday if the comet is visible this
far south. After a trip of several millions years from the Oort
Cloud at the far reaches of our solar system, the chunk of gravel
and ice, several miles in diameter, makes its closest pass around
the sun Sunday, March 10, and is not likely to show up again for
100,000 years or so. Southern Hemisphere observers watched its
arrival; we get to watch its departure. Tuesday and Wednesday
evenings may be the best time to try to catch it about an hour after
sunset. On Tuesday, the comet will be just to the left of a day-old
crescent moon in the west, and on Wednesday it will be under the
moon. Look for the million-mile-long tail (actually two of them)
streaming eastward away from the sun. In El Sargento, the comet will
set around 7pm behind the mountains to the west, so the best time to
take a look will be from about 6:45 to 7pm. Once you spot it using
binoculars, you should be able to see it with the unaided eye. For
observers with a clear western ocean horizon, it will set about half
an hour later. For the next few weeks, it sets later and farther to
the north each evening until it is too dim to see. Another Comet,
Ison, is expected to be visible during the day, and if it
does not break up going around the sun, it could be the brightest in
recorded history. It will makes its appearance around Thanksgiving
this year. There will be a spectacular two-minute-long total
eclipse of the sun on the morning of August 21, along a 100km
wide path stretching from Salem Oregon to Charleston on the East
Coast. But that's not until 2017, so start making plans. Tom S.

ROAD REPORT
a. Answer: We drove that road two days ago; we did so to
avoid the congestion between Ensenada and El Rosario. I also drove
that road before it was paved; it was a genuine adventure then. The
newly paved road is very good and is paved to 5 km north of Bahia
Gonzaga. There’s a tall bridge that must be finished before the road
is paved all the way. Be careful not to go too fast, as there are
dips that may launch you into places you don’t expect.
We had lunch at the legendary Alfonsina’s restaurant/hotel. Despite
being out in the wilds, prices were low, three nice tacos for USD$6.
The dirt/gravel/rock road to Mex 1 is good for 50 MPH in places and
in other sections, 5 MPH. The 36 miles took us about 90 minutes. In
conversation with a local at Alfonsina’s, I learned that this
section from Gonzaga Bay to Mex 1 may be paved this year. The
encouraging sign is that we saw survey markers along the way,
suggesting that the road will be paved soon.
Be sure to stop at Coco’s Corner and have a cold cerveza with the
equally legendary CoCo, a delightful guy.
I reduced the tire pressure on our F250 crew-cab from
60 PSI to 40 PSI; this helps reduce the high frequency chatter. We
aired up again at a llantera in Vizcaino; I gave the guy MXN$20 for
the air.
Gas up in San Felipe and then again at Jesus Maria Guerrero Negro or
San Ignacio. Feliz viaje! Ron (East Cape)
