Baja Night Sky -- Monday, March 25, 2013 -- An
almost-full Moon rises exactly in the east soon after 5:13pm
tonight. Tuesday evening's rising Moon, two or three finger widths
south of due east and 99.8% full, will rise about 6:12pm. A
rising full Moon, which clears the eastern horizon in under 2 ½
minutes, is an out-of-this-world sight to watch through binoculars.
Did you know that the Moon was probably homo sapiens's first
timekeeper and is responsible for our seven-day week? Or that
without the moon there would probably not be life on Earth? Or that
early Earth did not have a moon, but later probably had two? And may
still have two! More about that next time. Can you spot the names of
three of the seven visible "planets" of the ancient world in the
days of the week--Sunday, Monday, and Saturday? Easy huh? For the
other four, think Spanish: Martes, Miercoles, Jueves, y Viernes.
I'll arrange for a new star, a nova, in the sky tomorrow night for
anyone who gets all seven--physicist holding on to pre-Galilean
ideas of the solar system excluded. You can find it Tuesday evening
at 8:04:15pm by looking half-way to the zenith in the southeast sky.
Go outside a few minutes early to allow your eyes to accommodate to
the dark and to be early in case your watch is slow. It should be
the brightest thing in the sky besides the Moon. Monday night
