a. Discussion: Road from Bahia
San Luis Gonzaga to Mex 1
We drove the newly paved road from San Felipe
to Bahia San Luis Gonzaga. I heard that the remaining 30 miles
of lousy road would be paved by end of 2013 to connect to Mex
Hwy 1, at Laguna Chapala, south of Cataviña. I was encouraged
to see survey markers, suggesting this might be true.
I spoke with Joaquin, son of Alfonsina (Alfonsina's
is the legendary hotel/restaurant at Gonzaga Bay); he said the
road won't be completed for another two or three years. He's
not the road builder, but presumably is connected with what's
going on. If anyone knows more about this, please share.
And as you drive past Coco's Corner on the
way to Hwy 1, stop for a beer and chat with Coco. It's a good

b. 1) Mosquitos:
There's still nothing that works as well as DEET (as in
OFF!) for repelling mosquitos
SkinSoSoft works a bit, but is mediocre
compared to DEET. Recent report on NPR confirmed this.
Scientists think they've found promising results for new
products, but not avail yet. Ron
2) What I have used with great success are the
Incents pick your flavor !!! Or in the local
supermarkets there is a spiral smoke repellent brand
name "Raid" you light these up and as long they are
smokin' there is no mosquitos around you.
Garlic is pretty good but your also
repel some human being as well...LOL Also that really
works is the cow dry manure but its also annoying for
you as well. Jorge
3) I see the questions about mosquitoes. I
have posted about this in the past so time for a
refresher. We are in a desert with annual rainfall is
about 1-2 inches. We should not have mosquitoes. In
general if you do not have someone with a standing pool,
tires, containers even construction containers or
similar in the area, I have shown that the next major
breeding place is unscreened septic vents and house
vents. Or cracked septic tanks. In general this
mosquito the AE only flies about 100 yards from its
breeding source when there are many of them. In areas
where people have been able to screen off the septic
tanks they go from a misery index to a few in a week.
The life of the AE mosquito is about 30 days. See my

Discussion:
I've been driving down the BAJA for
20+ years including 5 -6 times a year for the last 3
years and have never seen anywhere near the amount of
repair/replacement work being done as is going on now.
Large projects, small projects and anything in between.
More machinery and men than ever.
Had 2 stops of about an hour each and
several stops of 5-15 minutes. Also saw miles of new
road had been opened since I last drove in Early August.
For me that is wonderful since I
drive that road a lot and at the rate they're going,
soon they will have replaced the whole thing. But
for those in a hurry it might be a hassle.
As for the Aduano at the border. I
saw no difference from other times. Crossed at San
Ysidro with a truck load. Had a list of items including
Mattress Table and chairs and a dresser, paid $200Pesos
and was on my way in about 15 min. Tom K Spa Buena

highways:
It is a federal law, (Ley de Caminos,
Puentes y Autotransporte Federal); said law was
modified by the National congress on Arpil 12th 2013,

Thus, from Oct. first, 2013 one needs,
any where in Mexico, to be insured while driving on
federal highways (Art. 63.Bis). In the event that one
can not show an insurance policy to the federal highway
patrol (Federales) the officer will issue
a fine which will be equivalent to 200 times the minimum
wage of 64.70 pesos in the Federal District for not
respecting the law ( Art. 74.bis I)plus an additional
fine 20 to 40 days of the same wage for not having an
isurance policy ( Art. 74.bis II); this will be
cancelled if the owner of the vehicule presents within
45 days a policy at the office of the Federal police
(Second paragraph of 74.bis II). Since the law says
that a non insured vehicule can not be driven on federal
highway the car will be towed to their compound yard
(Art. 74.Ter. IV.). One has 21 days to pay the fine, if
one does it inside this time frame one gets a 50%
discount; Procedure: One has to go to the Federal
Highway patrol office, get a document with which is used
to pay at the bank, comes back to the office with the
bank´s receipt.
