There have been a few questions about
Routers in the past couple of months. Okay, only two. There are
two terms worthy of note: a DSL Modem is the device that
connects you to the internet through the phone line. A router
takes that digital information and routes it to the various
computers on your network. In fact, the router has all the
brains that sends the information you requested to your computer
and not your spouse's computer. Telmex (Prodigy) provides us
with a Modem/Router that has both built-in to the same unit.
That's the easy part. If you are looking to upgrade your system
and extend your range, a better router would be a good step. I
use DLink, Netgear and Apple products. In Mexico, I still use
the Telmex 2-Wire Modem/Router. I sometimes find them at Garage
Sales in the US for under $5. The 2-Wire products in the US
were sold under different names such as AT&T. They will work in
Mexico once you have changed the protocol to Telmex's standard.
I do have a Netgear modem/router that works without any
modification in Mexico. In order to program the Modem/Router,
you will need to know your "Sign on name" and "Password" from
Prodigy. Most of our systems in Mexico use PPPoe sign-on
protocols. An alternate way to get the modem connected to the
internet is through the unit's MAC Address. That alpha numeric
is written on the bottom of the modem. If Prodigy can enter that
MAC Address into the system, you can forget the Sign-on and
Password requirements. Programming a router can be fairly easy,
I have a good friend who is 83 and she can program a router.
Having said that, I have a bald spot directly associated with
programming routers.
If you haven't dozed off, let's look at plan B. Your current
Modem/Router is working just fine but it won't reach as far as
you would like. Remember, Rebar is the enemy of all wireless
signals!!! You can add a second router to your Modem/Router.
Look for one that has G and N systems - 802.11g and 802.11n. N
is the longest range currently available. There is a wireless
system 'ac" on the way but it's a bit early. Having said that
the new Apple Airport Extreme has the newest systems but they
are pricey!!! For my self, both in the US and Mexico, I still
use the 2-Wire Modem/Router with a couple of Apple Airport
Extremes. While a bit more expensive, the Airport Extremes can
be programmed from your Ipad, Iphone, Itouch, Mac Computer or
PC.
Call for help!!! I have brought several modems (stand alone
units) to Mexico and tried to program them to work. I have not
been successful. If any other "Geek" out there has had any
luck, let us know!!!
