The East Cape Guild will hold its annual membership drive meeting on
Wednesday, February 19, at 11:00 at the Rancho Leonero Hotel dining
room. This is an opportunity to get to learn what the Guild does and
how we do it. We meet for about an hour and then break for lunch
which is provided at no cost and then play bingo. It is one of our
fun social events of the year. If you would like to attend or just
want to know more about how the Guild raises funds to support local

The Amigos de Animales of La Ribera will be having
their annual Rummage sale and Baked Goods sale on Saturday, February
22, 2014, in La Ribera at the home of Lynda Wise - Casa Roblyn. It
is located on Prof. Maria Luisa Carballo Calle, circa 16 de
Septiembre. Our hours will be 9:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. with 1/2
prices starting at 11:00 A.M. We will have coffee available as well
as our famous breads, cakes, pastries, etc. All proceeds go to
further our services to the animals. Please come and participate in

Baja Night Sky. The Moon,
Jupiter, and Winter Hexagon continue to be higher in the evening sky
each evening. Wasn't that a great Valentine's full Moon? My wife's
maiden name is Lundi, Moon in French. So I was graced with two
beautiful Moon's that evening. I had a group over Tuesday evening to
look at Jupiter's Galilean Moons, its equatorial bands, and,
hopefully, the Giant Red Spot. We saw Jupiter's moons and equatorial
bands, but no Red Spot. That was probably because, being polite, we
each took only a half- to one-minute peer through the eye piece.
This is not a good way to view fine detail through an astronomical
telescope. Thirty minutes would be much better. The atmosphere --
and view -- change by the second. And your eye adapts. During a
10-minute session at the eyepiece, you are more likely to have a few
clear views producing fine detail. The Southern Cross is now over
the south point of the horizon around 3:30am. Starting Friday
morning, as late as 5:30am, there will be a great show in the SE:
three planets, three moon-planet conjunctions, the center of the
Milky Way Galaxy, the giant J-shaped Scorpio constellation, and the
closest star to Earth at a little more than 4 light years away. More
