a. Big shout-out to La
Ventana resident Terry Wild (kiter Terry) whose son Vic Wild won the
Olympic Gold medal for Russia in the men's parallel giant slalom in
Sochi Russia today. Vic's wife Alena won the bronze in the women's
race. Vic was born and raised in White Salmon, Washington. He moved
to Russia after marrying his wife Alena in 2011, and has been a
member of the Russian snowboard team since then. They race again on
Saturday in the parallel slalom. Congratulations to Terry and his
family.

b. Please be careful. On Monday February 17th our trailer was
broken into in North El Sargento. We believe that the robbers had
targeted us and knew that we left Monday mornings at 8am. They came
between 8am and 11am, in broad daylight. They stole the following
items, 2 black & white Norco Mountain Bikes, 1 Lenovo Thinkpad
Laptop computer, 1 Panasonic Lumix digital camera, 1 JVC video
camera, 1 Vortex Binoculars and an inverter. Unfortunately they
forgot the chargers for the cameras. If anybody has any information

BAJA NIGHT SKY. Thursday, Feb. 20: (1) Jupiter, Sirius,
and Canopus are the brightest objects in the evening sky now. By
9pm, Canopus is low on the southern horizon below Sirius. The Milky
Way stretches upward on the left of these stars. Sirius is a young
star, and fifth closest to Earth at 8.65ly. Canopus is bigger, and
far more luminous than Sirius, but appears dimmer at its distance of
310 ly. It is a dying star that has used up its hydrogen and is now
burning, by fusion, its small supply of heavier elements. When they
are gone, it will collapse into a dead, white-hot Earth-size dwarf.
(2) The early-morning southern sky around 5:30am is dominated by
J-shaped Scorpio. The constellation has been called the scorpion by
desert cultures for all of written history. The bright star Shaula
is its stinger, and red Antares its heart. A line from Antares
through the middle head star, Dschubba, currently points at Saturn,
whose rings are visible now through a telescope. Friday morning the
Moon will escort Saturn across the sky. The brighter of the two
stars on the horizon below Saturn is Alpha Centauri, the third
brightest, and closest star to Earth at 4.36 ly. Its companion,
Hadar, just to the west, is actually a triple star system, three
stars, two of them twins, orbiting a common center. They are 90
times as far away as Alpha Centauri. West of Saturn, Mars is
expanding into a more vivid red as we close in on it, and then pass
it on April 8, on our orbit around the sun. (3) The brightest
Iridium Flare of the year so far occurs on Saturday at 7:01:55pm
(+/- 10 seconds). Look high in the NNE sky, about 60 degrees (six
fists at arm's length) above the horizon. It should outshine Venus
and Jupiter combined for several seconds. Tom S.

b. Discussion: Animal
poisoning in La Ribera
1) Animal
poisoning update – La Ribera. The information from the local vet
indicates that there have been several fatal incidents with cats and
dogs being poisoned in the area and the numbers are still rising.
Please be vigilant with your pets and do not let them roam the
streets. Please also keep your eyes and ears open for any
information that may lead to the perpetrator/s. The laying down of
poisoned bait is illegal in Mexico and, if caught, the penalties are
severe.

2) There have been
two more dogs killed in La Ribera by poisoning. A hot dog was found
in one of the yards and given to the police. Please keep your
animals close to your house and keep an eye on them. If you see
anyone appearing to be throwing something or feeding something to an
animal that does not belong to them, please report it to the police.
Poisoning animals is a criminal act in Mexico.
c. Car Importing:
Car Impounds: Disconcerting as it is, I can confirm things are
heating up as far as Foreigners with visas/perm residents/ dual
citizens driving cars with foreign license plates..... I received
two calls regarding importing calls yesterday. Although it is not in
my area of expertise- business, my girlfriend's family in Tijuana
has been importing cars for the last 40 years. They have an "Agencia
Aduanal" importing agency and I have worked with them for years.
Yes, you have to present your car at the border, but the process is
relatively easy and the family could not be nicer, or more
professional. If anyone has any questions regarding the process,
please fell free to contact me. Am here in Los Barriles and would be
happy to clarify concerns, and put you in contact with them if you
wish.
