BAJA NIGHT SKY. Thursday, Feb.
27: 1) New, or Dark of the Moon, occurs on Saturday. Sunday evening,
the 33-hour-old crescent moon will set behind the mountains to the
west around 7:30pm. Most people miss it because they never look. 2)
Here are two more targets for binoculars: 3) Just a few degrees
below Sirius is a beautiful open star cluster known as M41; 4) the
greenish Orion Nebula star factory is easily found in the sword of
Orion just below the three bright stars of the belt. The bright
stars in the nebula are young, born from giant collapsing spheres of
gas within the nebula. 5) Deneb, Altair, and Vega, the Summer
Triangle, are now in the early morning Eastern sky. Due to the
Earth's wobble, Deneb will become the pole star in about 9600 years.
Deneb is also the middle name of a friend's daughter. The ship he
served on was the Procyon. He was surprised to see both names in the
last BNS. In Chinese myth, Deneb is a bridge across the Milky Way
that allows friends to meet one night each summer. In Arab myth, the
sisters Procyon and Sirius were following their brother when they
came to the Milky Way. Sirius jumped in and followed her brother
across. Procyon did not like to swim. They have ever since been on
opposite sides, their tears spilling into the river. Maybe Deneb can
bridge the way for Sirius and Procyon to reunite. Tom S.
