BAJA NIGHT SKY. Venus is now the morning star and Mercury the
evening star. But you will need sharp eyes to spot Venus in the
east half an hour before sunrise, and Mercury in the west after
sunset. Saturn and Mars are still in the southeastern sky before
sunrise. I hope you saw the Moon and Jupiter side-by-side all
night Tuesday. And the full moon Wednesday night occurred at
its farthest distance from earth for a full moon in more than
1000 years. So it was the smallest full moon in 1000 years. The
Southern Cross is now visible exactly over the south point of
the horizon at 5:00 am. If you have binoculars, try finding the
Orion Nebula in Orion's sword, the Andromeda Spiral Galaxy above
and west of the M-shaped Cassiopeia, The Crab Nebula of Baja
Cave Painting fame about two fists above Jupiter, and The
Pleiades near Jupiter also. Starting January 20, you can use
your computer or smartphone to help measure the extent of light
pollution in Baja Sur. Instructions are at www.globeatnight.org.
Just count the stars you can see in Orion, compare your count
with one of 8 star maps, and send in your results. Choose the
maps for Latitude 20N. A new map with your results will be
published online.
Help! You wouldn't think of throwing your garbage through your
neighbor's windows, or blasting it into sea and sky. But that's
what happens when we turn on outdoor lights that don't have
proper shielding, ruining the night sky, causing insomnia and
disease, confusing wildlife, and wasting energy. A Breckenridge,
Colorado city ordinance states: ... fixtures and lighting
systems should be designed & installed to: 1) minimize impacts
on adjacent property owners; 2) control glare and light
trespass; 3) conserve energy; 4) maintain safety and security of
people and wildlife; and 5) maintain the view of the stars in
the night sky. I commend our new neighbor, Chad Christy, who
hails from Breckenridge, for installing non-polluting outdoor
lights on his new home in El Sargento. All outdoor lights on
his property are enclosed in sconces that he designed, which
direct all light to the ground where it is needed. We can look
over his house at night and see the stars clearly. There is none
of the glare or sky glow that comes from other nearby locations.
Instead, this house at night has a soft glow and striking

a. Bus Discussion: In San Jose last
week and picked up a list of departure times for Aquila buses (white
with blue markings).
They leave SJDC at 6:00, 8:00, 10:00, 12:15, 14:15,
16:15, 18:00. They do not stop at the airport proper, but out on the
highway at the overpass from the airport. A friend has simply got a
cab from the airport to there. Takes probably about 15 minutes to
get to airport vicinity stop.
There is/was? a green bus ("Autobus Climatizado" on the
display) which travelled from Cabo to LB for stops at the big stores
for shoppers (Costco, Soriana, et cetera). Don't know if that is
even still operating to LB. I am guessing that it makes frequent
(flag-down) stops.
