============================================= BAJA NIGHT SKY, Mon. 3/3: Andromeda is our sister
galaxy with 200 billion stars, 2.5 million light-years away. It will
soon be gone from the evening sky. 1) Use the W-shaped constellation
of Cassiopeia to star hop there; it's hanging sideways in the NW sky
until 8pm. The bottom V of the W points west to the star, Mirach.
Just a finger's width before Mirach, scan up and down, left and
right, until you find hazy Andromeda. 2) Jupiter still dominates the
evening sky. It is overhead from 7 to 10pm. Some observers can spot
its largest moon, Ganymeade, with the naked eye; try with
binoculars, but use a stead brace. Its four largest moons are just
points of light changing position as they circle Jupiter in a week
or less. 3) The morning sky around 5:30am, if there are no clouds or
lights to contend with, is stunning. What could top this view into
the universe? You can't miss Venus' dazzling light in the east.
Follow its arc west and you will encounter Saturn high in the south,
and Mars in the SW. From 5:45 to 6am, follow the same arc from Venus
back down to find Mercury rising. 4) The constellations Sagittarius
and Scorpio dominate the S and SE sky. Notice J-shaped Scorpio, and
to its east, the teakettle shape of Sagittarius. The spout of
Sagittarius is about to pour morning coffee into the curled tail of
Scorpio; tail and spout are both in the central core of the Milky
Way. There is a cluster just above the star where Scorpio's tail
loops east. Scan Sagittarius slowly with binoculars. It contains
more than 30 star clusters and nebula. 5) There will be a brilliant
flare in the south on Wednesday morning at 5:54:35am (± 10 sec.).
