BAJA NIGHT SKY #51:Tuesday
morning's sky--if there are no clouds-- should be spectacular: four
planets, a supergiant that could explode into a supernova at any
moment, an Iridium flare bursting right next to it, and a surprise
appearance by the Int. Space Station (ISS). Be up by 5am, turn off
outdoor lights, and find a dark place with a view of the southern
sky. 1) Locate Saturn by 5:10, high in the sky and slightly west of
due south. To its lower left is the J-shaped constellation Scorpio,
with the red supergiant Antares at its heart. 2) At 5:13:31 the ISS
will make a dramatic entrance, seeming to slip from behind or very
near Saturn. It will head towards Vega in the NE sky, 5th brightest,
one of our closest neighbors, and home of the alien civilization in
the 1997 science fiction movie "Contact." It will pass Vega at 5:15
and fade into Earth's shadow. 3) Return to Saturn by 5:20 and find
Mars to its west, just above the star Spica. You can't mistake Mars'
red tinge. According to NASA, the region between Mars and Saturn is
the center of random fireball activity around the March Spring
Equinox. If we are lucky, a bright meteor will streak from this
window during the hour. 4) Find Sagittarius and the bright stars
that form the teakettle asterism, handle on the left and spout on
right, just to the east of Scorpio. 5) Look for the glowing core of
the Milky Way between Sagittarius and Scorpio. 6) Before 5:27, go
back to Antares in Scorpio. This star, with a radius 400 times our
sun's, is running out of fuel. When it does, it will collapse, then
explode into the brightest object in the night sky. We will get a
preview at 5:27:17am (± 10 seconds) when an Iridium flare will burst
just to its upper right. 7) Find Venus, the brightest object before
sunrise, high in the ESE. 8) Now look for Mercury to the lower left
of Venus, not more than a fist width above the horizon. Most city
people have never seen this cratered planet. It starts to fade into
the light of dawn by 6am. 9) Linger for a while and ponder the night
sky. 10) Go back to bed. Tom S.
