BAJA NIGHT SKY #71, JANUARY 19, 2015 -- 1. You will need sharp eyes or binoculars to see the two-day-old crescent Moon just to the right of bright Venus between 6:30 and 7pm on Wednesday evening this week. Mercury is just beneath the pair but difficult to find. 2. Between 7 and 8pm this week, observers using binoculars should be able to find the Andromeda Galaxy, a giant spiral of 400 billion stars known as M31. Look for the large Square of Pegasus hanging in the western sky like a diamond. From Alpheratz, the star at the top of the diamond, two strings of stars curve off to the north. There are 3 stars in the upper stream matched by three in the lower stream. Mirach, the second star in the upper stream, is about as bright as Alpheratz. The matching star in the lower stream is faint. A line from Mirach through the faint matching star extended the distance between these two stars ends at the Andromeda galaxy. If you find Andromeda, extend a line from the galaxy back through Mirach and continue the distance from Andromeda to Mirach. You will end in the vicinity of the Pinwheel Galaxy, also known as M33. Each galaxy will appear as a large hazy glow through binoculars. 3. By 9pm, Jupiter is above due east with Sirius to its upper right, and Capella much higher to its left. 4. Vega, Saturn, and Arcturus form a large triangle in the eastern predawn sky around 5:30am. Arcturus is almost to the zenith with Vega at the lower left, Saturn at the lower right. The Big Dipper is high in the NE.
