February 15 a book signing with Wendell Williams
Another author on the East Cape? Unbelievable. Here he is, Wendell
Williams relaxing after a long day at the computer. Please come out,
meet the author and taste some wine. We will be offering some free
samples of local Baja wines. Wendell will share a little about his
career and why he decided to write the book. He says, “This book is
not just another litany of complaints; it offers a plan that will
solve many of our economic problems and explains how we can keep the
unemployment rate below five percent, indefinitely. WE CAN UNIFY
CAPITALISM WITH THE RIGHT KIND OF SOCIALISM. IF WE DO NOT DO THAT,
WE MAY BE HEADED TOWARD SOME KIND OF REVOLUTION!” Wine will be
flowing about 4:45 on February 15. Stick around after Wendell’s
brief talk for some discussion, book signing and more wine!
February 21 Luciano Pavan on the electric violin, extremely talented
Argentinian man.
February 28 Gordo Bank with Neil Henderson and friends.
March 7 a book signing with Serge Dedina
In his new book, Surfing the Border, longtime surfer,
conservationist and Imperial Beach Mayor Serge Dedina journeys into
the world of surf culture and travels around the globe to highlight
how surfing connects us to the scarce natural and cultural coastal
niches that remain. Co-founder and executive director of WiLDCOAST,
an international conservation organization, Dedina has dedicated his
life to protecting the coastline of California and Mexico.
Dedina is an award-winning conservationist who learned to surf in
the 1970s in the border town of Imperial Beach, California, where he
shared waves with colorful characters such as The Hulk and The
Electric Duck. A former ocean lifeguard, he has lived and surfed in
Mexico, El Salvador, Morocco, England, Spain, Peru, Australia, and
France. These experiences, and his career as a coastal
conservationist, form Dedina’s view of surfers as “outsiders on the
edge of
civilization who are able to experience life beyond borders.” For
Dedina, his life of surf travel and living between borders has
helped him to “find the original and unique among our increasingly
crowded and homogenous world.”
Whether he is providing tips on how to stay sane and not go broke
while raising kid surfers, discussing the rebirth of Baja as a
global tourism destination or hiking through jungle mud pits in
Mexico with his sons, in Surfing the Border, Dedina includes the
correct combination of humor and insight into the rapidly evolving
and global world of surfing. As Drew Kampion, author of Stoked!: A
History of Surf Culture says, “Surfing the Border is the story of
how Serge learned what he knows, what has fueled him and why he’s
optimistic about the power of surfing to carry us through.”
Plus music by Stamina a Reggae Trio starring Jose Luis Morales from
