Phone scam. I received a call on
our casa phone today (Friday) from a guy who said he is my favorite
relative and is here for a wedding in LaPaz. He used my last name
only and wanted me to guess his first name. He said he will be
coming through town and wants to come over for a visit. He said he
was calling from a Mexican cell phone at an OXXO in LaPaz. One hour
later he called again, saying he had a problem and wanted to speak
with my husband. I said no and told him I have caller I.D., his area
code is from Illinois and he is a scammer. He told me I'm stupid and
hung up. His number is 331-076-9782.
Be careful. Lynda, Tres Palapa's

Personally (my opinion) I just love these discussions and thank you
to everyone for respecting the BPE agenda. No rumors, no
jokes, no opinions and no "blog mentality".

Regarding the crossing at Tecate, we had the same motorcycle cop
pull us over in November on the excuse of not coming to a complete
stop at the crosswalk but he wanted $1200.00 pesos. Don't pay!!!! We
called his bluff and said we preferred to go to the police station
and we followed him, on arriving we asked where to park and he told
us to have a safe trip and we could go. Always request to go to the
police station as they're banking, not only on your fear, but the
inconvenience in your travel time. It's nothing short of extortion
and if we ALL stop paying they may just get the picture.
2) Just an observation from an old time Baja traveler:
500 pesos for stopping in a crosswalk (even if you did) is way too
much. I have found that if you refuse to pay the price goes down, if
they are trying to extort money for something you didn't do, I say
no, if they say anything about going downtown just say you didn't do
anything and you would be happy to go downtown with them.. (there is
no place to go downtown!!!) Usually they leave immediately when you
say this (100% of the time for me). If I did break some law
(speeding etc.) I will sometimes pay them but for the crosswalk
violation I would give him 200 pesos max.. Hope this helps...
b. ATM Machines
1) In response to
ATM post #3 on todays BPE, I also wanted to take more money out than
the 2000 pesos. So, like others I pushed 'other' and got nowhere.
So, I tried again, and this time when it came to the amount I just
put in 4500 and clicked continue and get my money each time. Just a
thought seeing as we only have the one ATM in town. Good luck,
Sylvia
2) I see there have been several instances of ATM problems.
Simply because these events make it to the BPE, it follows that many
of these "victims" are not tourists, but extended stay visitors. My
question, therefore is: Why do you not have a debit/credit card from
a Mexican bank? You can use it instead of cash at many, many
businesses here in Baja, including Costco, Pemex, City Club, Home
Depot, Sorianna, lots of restaurants and the list goes on and on.
There are no withdrawal fees with your Mexican ATM card. (Matter of
fact, it worked at a major grocery store in Canada last year when I
accidentally used it instead of my Cdn debit card.) You have to keep
a pretty healthy minimum monthly balance, but I find that minor
annoyance more than offset by the convenience of the card. Moreover,
if you set up a US$ bank account, you get the very best exchange
rate when you withdraw pesos from that US$ account at the ATM! Last
time I checked it was 15.3 at the ATM, 14.8 via the customer service
rep, but 14.3 at the teller.)
Cheers! Jim
3) ATM - wanted to advise that last week we visited the HSBC
located in the strip mall behind Mega in San Jose. We were able to
withdraw 11,000 pesos from their ATM using a Canadian debit care
without any problems. The bank of Nova Scotia would only give us
2,000.
