Phone Scams.........Hard to believe
anyone could possible get sucked in but these phone calls
are happening almost every day. I personally know of
one person who did send money. I know of another who
went to the bank, ordered a wire transfer and then came to
their senses and were able to stop the transfer in time.
Or play their game, keep them on the phone for hours!
An American man called my Mexican land line Wed. identifying
himself as my partner's cousin, saying he was in Cabo for a
friend's wedding and wanted to come visit us here in Los
Barriles. Half hour later he called saying he had been in a
'fender bender' and could not access enough cash, would I
help? He put the "crashee" on the phone and she explained
that her 4 year old daughter had been hurt and was on the
way to the clinic (blah, blah blah). The 'cousin' admitted
fault and "just wanted to pay her the $26,340.00 pesos to
repair the BMW, clinic costs and get this over with". After
an extended go round with this guy I finally called him out
as a scammer and told him he should be ashamed of himself. I
know, really assertive! This man, had the audacity to beg me
for the money because the "cartel would probably kill him if
I did not give it to him". This went on far too long and
they nearly had me because I could not verify the cousin
(whom I'd never met) was actually in Cabo until it was
almost too late. These guys are sophisticated. They know a
lot of personal information before they call and I
inadvertently gave more. "Oh, you must be X?" I suspect they
are getting the information from our Tel Mex bills. This was
bad so BEWARE!!
