ANSWERS - DISCUSSIONS
a.
Auto relay switch question. Answer:
If you have a house alarm, you need to connect a
contact relay to it that would open (turn off) when one or more
window/door is open and close (turn on) when everything it closed
up. Ideally it would have a time delay built in so it doesn't
operate every time you answer the front door. You probably need your
house alarm company do identify the switching circuit in the control
panel.
The relay would have to be big enough to handle the
switch load (not the motor load) for your AC unit. I saw some
electronic relays in a Vancouver store yesterday that were about
$15-$25 CDN that would do the trick. I don't know where you would
buy them in La Paz. Any electronics store....
If you don't have a house alarm, it is almost as easy.
You need a magnetic switch at each door and window in the house and
the relay. You wire these in series (one after the other) and
connect to the relay. When one is open the relay turns off the AC. A
time-delayed relay would be best. There are now wireless magnetic
switches if you don't want to run wires everywhere. The downside to
them is they need batteries.
A magnetic switch is two parts. One contains a magnet
and that connects to the window or door. The other has a switch (and
two wires) and it is screwed to the door/window frame. When the
door/window is open, the switch also opens (no magnet nearby to hold
it closed). They are quite small and operate on low voltage so easy
to wire.
After I indicated that we wanted a wireless system, he
sent more info on how to choose the right items:
You'll need to figure out the voltage and amperage of
the switching. You need to have some electrical understanding to
chose the right contact relay (delay contact relay ideally). That
means knowing what the switch circuit voltage is on your AC unit (it
might be 120 VAC or 24 VDC) and what voltage you want to power the
relay with (I would use the same as the AC switching circuit).
Because neither of us are electrically inclined, we are
now looking for someone qualified to do the work. If more info comes
to light, I will share that, also.
