As most of you know, Berenice Duran and her friends Rubi Mejia and
Valentina Sandez are very active members of our local Rotary in Los
Barriles. Anytime volunteers are needed, they come smiling. They’re
unafraid to wield hammers or paint brushes and are often seen
donating time to prepare meals for our events and work parties. Now
they’re hosting a special buffet to help pay for needed repairs and
remodeling of Berenice’s café Pez Gordo in La Ribera. Bring your
friends and savor many great traditional Mexican dishes, all for a

2016 East Cape Annual Festival de
Artes
Announcing the 23rd Annual Festival de Artes, to be held at the
beautiful "Hotel Palmas de Cortez" from 10:00am to 4:00pm, on Sunday
March 20, 2016. This popular event sponsored by the Asociación de
Artes on the East Cape, is known as the premier showcase for local
artists who display and sell their original art.
Funds from the Festival de Artes go to support the community
activities of the Asociación de Artes which include: Arts and
education supplies for 14 East Cape schools, sponsorship and
participation in the Los Barriles "Cursos de Verano" summer vacation
program, Local Artist Studio tours, and our ever popular Saturday
Arts & Crafts at the DIF for the local children.
The FOOD COURT will have returning the famous Palmas Carne Asada
Taco Stand, German Sausage Ladies from LaPaz, and Seth's Panaderia,
just to name a few. We always have all of your favorite cold
beverages and full bar.
BLUZ EXPOLSION from LaPaz will be explosive again on stage this
year. You won't want to miss a beat of their music that makes you
want to get up and dance. There will be shade to sit under, so eat,
drink, shop, and enjoy.

Charged In Dollars, Beware
Many restaurants have posted their menus in US dollars only, which
is illegal in Mexico. They are supposed to post in pesos first, and
then in foreign currencies.
But with the rate of exchange jumping up and down like a pogo stick,
maybe more up than down, some businesses are taking advantage of our
precious tourists by showing prices in US dollars only and then
using a high rate of exchange.
If you are a victim of this practice, you have options. Mexico has a
consumer protection agency, known as the least corrupt in the
country, called Profeco for its looong name in Spanish. You may take
a photo of the menu, and email it to the Profeco headquarters in
Mexico City. They have a page in English, but most of it is in
Spanish.
