I'm so sorry that Buen Provecho Chef Denise Marie
Elliott passed away after a brief illness on February 22, 2016 in
Baja California Sur, Mexico. Her 59 years represent a full life of
hard work, courage, art, music, gardening, and an eternal desire for
learning. Denise leaves a large international community of students,
colleagues, and friends. The memory of this kind and gracious woman
lives forever in our hearts. Donations in her honor can be made to
Denise’s Fund for improved emergency services and medical equipment
in San Bartolo (https://www.gofundme.com/4kt6tgph).
Thanks for your support of our Buen Provecho Mexican cooking and
culture classes, it was an honor to spend time with you in our

Baja Night Sky #90--Week of March 13, 2016:
1) Skilled stargazers use averted vision to see objects in the night
sky that usually require binoculars. Try using averted vision to
find the Beehive Star Cluster. First find Jupiter, the brightest
object in the evening eastern sky. The bright star a fist & a half
above Jupiter is Regulus. If you draw a line from Jupiter to Regulus
and extend it the same distance, you end up in the faint Y-shaped
constellation Cancer the Crab. Search this region until you become
aware of a smudge of brightness, larger than the moon, in the
periphery of your vision. The normal tendency is to turn your eyes
to take a more direct look. If you do, the smudge disappears. Try
again, but this time hold the smudge in your periphery which has
more faint light sensitive rods. You should be able to make out
individual stars. Now use binoculars to see 20 or more of the 1000+
stars in this swarm of celestial bees. 2) For early risers, the
beautiful J-shaped constellation Scorpio is directly above the
southern horizon around 5:00am. Mars is at the left side of the
scorpion's head; Saturn is to the upper left of red Antares, the
scorpion's heart. There are two open star clusters near the stinger
of the scorpion (the end of the J's hook) that you can see with
averted vision. The blue-white stars in the stinger, left to right,
are Shaula and Lesath. Ptolemy's cluster is at the 9:30 position
about half a fist from Shaula. The Butterfly cluster is just above
Ptolemy's cluster. View with binoculars also. Tom at
