TWO BIG FUNDRAISING CONCERTS –   LA VENTANA

Two major fundraising concerts benefiting No Más Basura (No More Trash) in La Ventana/El Sargento are on the horizon.

The first will be held at Dalaney’s, Friday, February 23. Come for the pizza at 5 p.m. and stay for the concert at 6 p.m. A 150-peso donation for the concert will be collected at the door. The three acts, including one from the Pacific Northwest, will perform.

Carol and Wille Ornelas will present the second concert at their home, Wednesday, March 7, from 5-9 p.m. A 200-peso donation will be requested. Bring your own chairs, food and drink. Casa Vista Cerralvo, the Ornelas home, is on the big arroyo before the Hot Springs Beach.

Carol and Willie are presenting four acts from the States plus two local performers.

Proceeds from the concerts will help No Más Basura maintain its recycling program and protect the beauty and health of the communities.

The February 23 concert includes:

Dave McGraw and Mandy Fer—This Pacific Northwest-based duo joined forces in 2010. This is their first appearance in Baja. Their 2014 release, “Maritime”, charted at #1 on the EuroAmericana Chart for two months. Their exceptional vocal harmonies, coupled with Fer’s pioneering electric guitar work, have taken them around the world. The duo’s latest release, “Off-Grid Lo Fi,” was recorded entirely with solar and wind power on an off-grid island in Washington.

Terry Townson and Fred Hagen—Terry Townson is a Grammy Award-winning trumpet player/arranger/composer. Over the last 40 years, he has performed or recorded with artists including Ray Charles, Kenny Rogers, Lena Horne, Paul Shaffer, Buddy Guy, Gregg Allman, The Temptations, Wayne Newton, Eric Burdon, Gatemouth Brown, Delbert McClinton and Colin James. Saxophonist Fred Hagen has been a part of the music scene throughout southern Baja for two decades and performs regularly in Canada and Baja with a variety of ensembles in a range of styles from classical to jazz to rhythm and blues.

Larry and Raven currently perform in the Pacific Northwest in the summer and Baja in the winter. Striving for sweet harmonies and intricate vocal intervals, they challenge themselves by transforming classic tunes with an acoustic style and interweaving voices. Choosing artists that vary from Led Zeppelin to Abigail Washburn, they cover a wide range of musical genres. In addition to cover songs, Larry’s gifted songwriting talent brings beautiful originals that create a fun, easy-listening atmosphere.

The Ornelas concert features:

Teresa James and husband Terry Wilson assembled some of LA’s top musicians for The Rhythm Tramps. The group has worked in LA, at blues festivals and clubs throughout the US and Europe. Her most recent of eight CDs, “Come on Home,” topped off at #3 on the Roots Radio Charts. Tramps band member Billy Watts contributes guitar and vocals and has played with the likes of Jackson Brown, Bonnie Raitt and Jennifer Warnes.

Willie Ornelas has had a 50-plus year career playing drums for major artists including Sonny and Cher, Loggins and Messina, Al Jarreau, Ray Charles, Taj Mahal and BB King. He appeared on soundtracks for TV series including “Magnum PI,” “A-team,” “Hill Street Blues” and “Rockford Files.”

Tony Braunagel produced a Grammy Award-winning album for Taj Mahal and worked on numerous other albums as musician, composer and producer. In addition to drums, he also sings and is a Blues Music Award winner.

Lenny Goldsmith spent years with bands like Tower of Power. The Malibu singer got his chops in the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s, singing for Five Americans, Sweathog, Tower of Power and others. He opened for The Who and Joe Crawford along the way.

Tim Scott, vocalist/bassist/songwriter, is an industry veteran who has backed notables including Eric Clapton, Stevie Wonder, Billy Preston, Dr. John, and John Mayall. The 18-year-member of Jack Mack and The Heart Attack has toured with Tower of Power, Dave Mason, Etta James, The Boneshakers, El Chicano and the Grammy All Stars.

My husband walking our 2 rescue Alma dogs this morning in the Buenos Aires area. Our dogs were leashed, a man who had 3 dogs unleashed when his Rhodesian Ridgeback viciously attacked 1 of our dogs & my husband. If you are reading this put that beast on a muzzle & leash him. You clearly have zero control over him. We did file a police report. Zuzu is at Gretl’s being operated on now & she better make it is all I have to say.
