b   ALMA:  It is with mixed emotions that the Board of Directors of ALMA Humanitaria, AC wish to announce that, after more than 15 years, ALMA will be ceasing operations.  While this decision has been a difficult one, we believe that this is the right thing to do at this time.  We are immensely proud of the wonderful work we have undertaken in our community over the years through the many individuals who have donated their time and resources out of an unwavering love of animals.  We wish to thank those that chased down and captured frightened dogs, delivered dog food to needy families, served as foster parents, welcomed our dogs and cats into their homes and hearts, transported dogs where and when needed, accompanied dogs to new homes, attended and worked fundraising events, donated auction items, served as master of ceremonies, donated the use of their homes or businesses, served on the Board of Directors, and helped out at spay and neuter clinics.  We also want to extend a tremendous thank you to all of our financial donors who, over the years, gave so generously to us.  Most especially we want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the incomparable Dr. Gretel de la Torre who provided loving care to our animals and to Dr. Christobel Cosia and all the other veterinarians who helped out over the years.  We will support, in any way we can, and hope that our many supporters do the same, the other non-profit organizations in our community, both old and new, working to reduce the pet population and to rescue dogs and cats in distress.

**Stay tuned!** A new animal non-profit is currently being formed with three main aims: to help the community through education and awareness of responsible pet ownership, to support SNAP with spay and neuter activities and to re-home abandoned animals via partners in Mexico, USA and Canada. Through strong partnerships across Baja we will be sharing best practice and we will work together to be more effective.  This includes all vets, humane societies and rescue groups.   We will be publishing more news on the BPE very soon including our name, website etc.

a.  The injured seal: (1) received Tuesday, Just saw the injured seal. He or she was floating all day about 1/2 mile off shore. I did not know what it was so I paddled out there. Didn’t appear to be in very good shape. He had his head upside down in the water and one fin out. He gave me a big splash warning to back off and I did just that and wished him well. I guess only time will tell his fate.   (2)  Seal still on beach and alive as of 9 am Tuesday.

b.  AT&T:  More ATT Updates: Lots of requests for information about my ATT Plan. I called ATT to be sure I have accurate info.  My plan is called “Unlimited Plus”. a.   Injured Seal at Spa BV:  (1)  Injured seal has not been helped in Spa. Situation is urgent if anybody knows who to contacted please do so asap.

(2)  He is in front of our house.  Hauled out on the beach to rest and recoup from what appears to be a shark bite a few days ago.  Profepa was here but didn’t do anything.  If people would just leave him alone it looks like he will make it.  Seems everyone good intentionally runs up to him and only increases the stress he is under plus the dogs really bother him.  International Wildlife Resuce organization recommends staying back at least 150 feet to minimize stress.  Was back in the water today and was successfully catching octopus so he is  back to feeding himself and hopefully will be off soon.

b.   When I drive the Baja Hwy’s I have a “Dash Cam” mounted on the windscreen.  That camera records a continuous loop of my driving as well as any and all stops that I make for Stop Signs.  It also records Speed.   If I’m ever stopped by any police officer, I can replay all events including speeds.  I carry a CA State ID card that looks exactly like a drivers license.  I always offer that document first.  If asked for the
driver’s license, I quickly produce it.  I used that ID passing through TSA when he told me my drivers license could no longer be used as a valid ID for TSA.  I showed him the State ID card, he told me I was not allowed to have two licenses.  I asked him to read the fine print, that it was an ID only.  You do not have to be a resident of CA to get an ID.  In fact, they are free for seniors.  As reported in the Gringo
Gazette, take a photo of the officer and ask for the “ticket”.

a.  Police stops Highway One up North:  We were pulled over yesterday just outside Guerrero Negro by a Federal Policeman. He claims we were going more than the speed limit. He showed us his radar gun which read 170 kmh and a ticket book and threatened to have our car towed to the impound until Monday. At best we were going 100 kmh. We did not have the time to call him on it and asked if he would give us a warning. He said we could pay the ticket now. We paid $3000 pesos and were on our angry way.

b.  Answer-Cell phone:    Thanks to all the responses I got regarding cellular service in Baja. Lots of requests for me to summarize the responses I got. I have had ATT with an unlimited plan for years and it works great for me, I use it just as if I am still in the US without any extra charges for calls, texting & data in Mexico and from Mexico to the US. My question was posed to see if there is a comparable but cheaper option. All but 4-5 responders recommended ATT. Of those few who are not using ATT, most were using T-Mobile. One person said they were very sorry they has switched from ATT to T-Mobile while the others felt it met their somewhat limited needs. One Verizon customer was very pleased with their service. ATT has partnered with TelCel over the past year so that is why coverage is so good. I will stick with my ATT plan even if there are cheaper options out there. b.  Hola amigos,  As every year, we are almost approaching to our Childrens Day Fishing Tournament. This year this event will be on Sunday May 6^th at Lazy Daze as always and it will be run by the Rotary Club of Los Barriles, the Club Deportivo Cabo del Este, the Cabo del Este Fishing Club and by Francis Olachea our Mayor. We hope all of you can help us out to make this day special for all of our community kids. This fishing tournament have became the most memorable event for the kids in town, and all of that is because of all you who help year after year. For this edition we will have 4 locations to receive donations: Josefina Ruiz at Seven Seas Office, Rexe at Lazy Daze, Alma Cota and Felipe Valdez at Hotel Buenavista. And here are some examples of prizes that you can kindly donate: Sports products (bats, gloves, soccer balls, basket balls, snorkels, boards, skateboard, use fishing rods, use reels, lures), toys (dolls, action figures, cars, table games, lego, waterguns), clothes (costumes, hats, tennis shoes, sandals) and any other things that you consider good for kids from 4-12. Remember Childrens Day is for kids from kindergarden to primary school only (4 to 12 years old).

Details of the tournament are as every year very simple, there are 10 main prizes (that we also need interested people who would like to donate this ones)  and we try to have at least one prize for all the kids. We ask to all the people who owns a boat to get a team together. The idea is to take as many kids out fishing, its only from 7am to 12pm, lunch and award ceremony its right after. REGISTRATION is Saturday 5 de Mayo at Lazy Daze from 3pm to 7pm. If someone owns a boat and don’t have any kids to take out, come over have a cold beer while we sign up the kids and we will help you to get a team together.

The main prizes that we try to give out are: laptop, tablet, bicycles, camera, new rods, new reels, kayak, SUP. This are the prime prizes for the first 10^thplaces. a.  Road Report:     North of Guerrero Negro… There is moderate current activity and efforts being made to fill potholes… But there are still a few that might swallow your vehicle if you are not careful! Safe travels… and enjoy a few of the gorgeous newly paved stretches between GN and Catavina!

b.  Road/US Immigration:  US immigration note: They checked our dogs’ health certificates crossing at Tecate.

c.   Road report north 1. Left Sunday the 15th. Road conditions much improved from trip down in January. North of Gro Negro filled, north of Bahia LA turn new pavement for quite a few miles, then filled potholes, above Cativina some small holes remain, but considering the task WAY better.

d.  Road Report:  Headed north and currently in San Felipe- road from Guerro Negro potholes but manageable. Be ALERT! Not as bad as I expected.  Chapala to Mex 5- better than the fall but watch and follow heavily trafficked path.  Coco Corner to San Felipe-  dirt is OK,  stretch from pavement to Gonzaga  good. North pf Gonzaga- go SLOW. Pavement is a mess and they are working on the road in several places. Watch for potholes. Not any better than last fall.

b.  Just a heads up for anybody who’s coming up to La Paz We are heading north and obviously home with surfboard on roof etc. and just pulled over by police telling us that because we are a truck pulling a trailer we are considered a “double remolque” and the speed limit for us is slower than other vehicles! So he pulled us over and tried to tell us that we could either follow him to the police station or pay the ticket!! We said no…we were not speeding… And we thanked him for the warning… He tried to argue with John in favor of giving us a ticket and I refused to let him intimidate us. I told him that we were on vacation and that we love Baja California and we love La Paz and we never drive fast and I just said NO…we were not going faster than the flow of traffic! Just a heads up… he said he had already given 20 tickets to American‘s today! When asked how many tickets we had, we said none he said so today will be your first ticket? I took off my sunglasses and said “NO” today will not be our first ticket!!!! There were lightning bolts coming out of my eyes!!! And my inside voice was saying… you can try to intimidate my husband but you will not intimidate me, little man…I bet you’re not even a real policeman!!!
He said thank you and shook my hand and let us go! SHEEESH!!!!
They were dressed like policeman but they were in a white truck with an insignia on the side but they didn’t have the arrogance and the professionalism of policeman but were very good with their intimidation routine…then I said “ we are not a “double remolque”…(and my inside voice said “ you little jerk“) …maybe the trick is to ask them if they are policeman? Or to ask to see their identification? I don’t think it’s necessary if you go far enough with the game and refuse to play… Also real policeman will pull up in municipal police cars and federal in federal vehicles… and will be much more professional and not wave their ticket book in your face and say that they have given 20 tickets to American’s today already! e.  I successfully reafiliated with Seguro Popular this morning at their office on Nicholas Bravo in La Paz. Took my passport, and a utility bill .  When I arrived and it was determined I was already in the system, my Residencia Temporal card was used, rather than my passport.  The office was on the ground floor, through well-signed glass doors.  Only one person was in line. The clerk spoke some English and we got through a few questions to determine what had changed since my original application in 2012. I was given my new letter of affiliation which is dated to expire in three years, and the current 80-page booklet explains Seguro Popular.  My trip to La Paz was required because I missed the visit by Seguro Popular staff to Los Barriles in March. Suggest phoning to check well ahead of your anniversary date to determine when staff plan to visit Los Barriles.  The phone numbers in La Paz are:   612 165 4376 and 612 128 9243.
