DISCUSSIONS – ANSWERS – ANNOUNCEMENTS

a.  We’re in the midst of teaching 100 kids in our community’s summer program to swim! We want safe, awe inspired swimmers and snorkelers! Although they live on the shores of the Sea of Cortez, they use the sea to keep cool but don’t know how to properly swim. There is no community pool or YMCA here which is how most kids learn to swim. We’re midway and it’s awesome – better than we could have ever imagined. We’re teaching them to use masks and snorkels and when on their faces, their entire dog paddling bodies come to the surface, stretch out, float, and they move forward. In the midst of swim lessons we’re teaching about reefs and reef fish, not just fish to be caught and eaten. We want them to understand this sea is one of the most biodiverse bodies of water on the planet and it’s theirs, in their backyard. We hope to create ‘awe’ inspired swimmers and snorkelers; we’ll take them to a reef and many will see reef fish for the first time. We hope they’ll experience Jacques Cousteau’s ‘World’s Aquarium’ here in the Sea of Cortez. This program is offered through East Cape Recycling’s environmental education program.  If you’ve ever come to a movie at Parque Laguna or if you’ve ever recycled here, you’ve contributed to this summer’s program to teach 100 kids to swim and become awe inspired swimmers and snorkelers. With six kids in a pool every hour, four hours a day, two days a week, our enthusiastic instructor’s assistants are Isabel Flores, Simone Mills, Susan Bruggeman, Betsy O’Leary, Ben Ballay, Kiara Ballay, Dane Jones, Cyndi Nixon, Lorri Gammon, Brent McCubbin, Paloma Ojeda. Our ‘Water Watchers’ are Lily Lee, Chris Schraefel, Kay Ueckert, Betty Cota, Lupita Araiza, Devi Kasson, Ian Sanders, Daniela Rochin, Guera Silva. Our volunteers are gifted and love these children and we love being with them. Mayor Francie and her team at DIF are unparalleled in this program. We’re purchasing 100 masks and snorkels as gifts and donations were received by Bob & Wendy Sexton, John G Brant, East Cape Recycling, Baja’s Awesome Sportfishing and Baja’s Awesome Beach Rides. The kids program was so well accepted by parents that we are now teaching 6 adults how to swim on Saturdays. b.  Diesel:  “The entire Baja, every station from top to bottom, has been pumping ULSD since November of last year (2017). There is NO Mexican LSD on the Baja any more.  In addition, almost everywhere else in Mexico has already converted to ULSD ahead of the final date for conversion, which is Dec 31/18. There are only a few isolated pockets of LSD remaining on the mainland. The days of sulfur-in-fuel problems in Mexico are over. No need to be concerned about your diesel vehicle using Mexican fuel.
