a.  The question whether there is Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) on the Baja gets raised on a regular basis, so here is the latest information, from the go-to person on the web who has followed the subject for more than 10 years.  The entire Baja now has ULSD, EVERY station from top to bottom. This situation has existed since late in 2017.  I was in the Southern Baja (Los Barriles) for almost 6 months over the winter and for the first time ever there were ZERO sulfur-in-fuel problems reported anywhere on the Baja. My own 2016 diesel truck didn’t throw a single fuel related trouble code all winter.  In March of 2018 I had diesel fuel from a station in Los Barriles tested at a lab in the USA – it was ULSD. Previous lab tests on fuel from the Northern Baja also confirmed that fuel as ULSD.  In addition to the Baja, almost all of Mexico has been pumping ULSD since April of 2018, in advance of the final date for conversion, which is Dec 31/18. The days of sulfur-in-fuel issues in Mex appear to be over.  ed White whitetmp@aol.com

d.  Whew! Tons of conflicting info out there regarding one-time move of household items. Does anyone have any recent experience with this? Consulate here requires an appt. plus $127 to do the paperwork (is this really necessary, or can we just have the required list, copies of passport etc. with us when we cross?) Then, are we subject to possible import taxes at the crossing for things like a quad? (online says 17% import tax! but have also read that some folks aren’t charged at all?). Plan to cross at Mexicali – is this crossing any better/worse? Still trying to get an appt at the consulate for Permanent Residency card, but not sure this will be completed before leave. If we come in on just the standard FM, 6 mo. “tourist” Visa, are we allowed to bring in household items? For any amount they do impose at the border, we assume it needs to be in pesos? Since they specify only “used’ items can be brought in, I assume I just need to remove original packaging and price tags on the few new things I have purchased new…? a.  Poisoning:  I just saw your post about the poisoning. We have done so much to try and prevent this but it’s not working.  The only thing people can do is report it to the police. The more reports they have the more empowered they are to take action. Cortez Rescue is now part of a wider anti-cruelty initiative in La Paz County headed up by a designated Commandante in La Paz. But we need people to report incidents or any witnesses to come forward – otherwise we are helpless.
Several months ago we had a meeting of the police, vets and Mayor which is why we put the posters up around town. We now need to take this to the next level – let’s protect all of our pets by clubbing together. Please go to the police at the Delegacion if you know anything.

b.  With the most prize money ever, more than $657,125 was earned by 11 teams in a field of 62 boats with 360 competitors during the three day Bisbee tournament last week culminating with a spectacular fireworks display over the podium Saturday night on the beachfront at Hotel Buenavista. In a very unusual showing, five of the six billfish brought to scale were Black Marlin, in large contrast to the East Cape’s more typical blue marlin. Black marlin are considered the strongest, fastest and hardest fighting billfish in the world. The winning black marlins weighed 538 pounds, 493 pounds and 393 pounds paying out more than $450,000 to the top three winning marlin teams. Team Awesome of Baja’s Awesome Sportfishing fished hard in the tuna gamefish category winning day three with a 78.1 pound yellowfin, also taking second place on days one and two with 90.1 and 78.5 pound tunas. Last year Team Awesome won day two in the tuna category and holds the East Cape Bisbee Yellowfin record with a 262 pound behemoth caught in 2012. b.  ****ALERT*****FIDOS This morning 2AUG, I was in my backyard when a dog showed up and tried to get a drink of water from a nearby bucket. She appeared in distress but I couldn’t tell what was wrong so I gave her the water and noticed she was not able to put any weight on one of her rear legs. I thought she’d been hit by a car so I went in to get my husband to help me put her in our car and take her to a vet’s office. She then made her way to our carport, in obvious distress, breathing very hard. I went to soothe her and she did let me pet her. She then went into serious seizures, multiple times! She was so scared. I just held her and then she vomited and more seizures. Poor thing! I could only try to soothe her. Got her to Dr. Cristobal and he confirmed it looked to him to be poison. She did not survive..I’m sorry for whomever she belonged to. She was dark brown with a white stripe up her face and green eyes. She was spayed and her buddy, a black dog came to check on her but took off before we could get close. She belonged to someone, probably they live in the Playa Norte area.Dr. Cristobal says he’s had 25 or more cases of poisoning this summer alone! I can only imagine what a sick individual there is to be doing this to innocent creatures around town. I am in tears and will be for some time but more importantly I am angry at this person. There must be more we as a community can do to determine who is doing this (yes, I know there are rumors as to who it is), we need proof and we need to make this person pay for what he has been doing.
