a. ROAD REPORT:  Road report highway 5 – We are recommending not to take this road south of San Felipe – Two members have reported yesterday not to take this road. South of San Felipe the road goes from bad to worse and the dirt section after Coco’s is horrible. Rick Dyer

Road conditions as of 9/18/2018 My wife and I just traveled from San Felipe down Mexico 5 towards Coco’s corner over to Hwy 1 North. Lots of road construction starting just south of South Beach all the way to Puertecitos. There is a detour as the road is being completely replaced with culverts under the road eliminating all the dips for water runoff. You will travel right next to the construction but it is very bumpy and dusty. The road south is nice once you pass Puertecitos and then is really bad again as you cross from Coco’s to Hwy 1. Seems like they just stopped the construction of the new bridges. Driving south of San Felipe in a Motor-home or car is not recommended. Scott and Patti Harmier info@vagabundos.com

a.  Sunday night, my 6yo dog Hattie died from leptospirosis, a contagious bacterial infection transmitted to animals through infected rodent urine.  We recently purchased a bunch of compost and the dogs would not stop eating it.  It may not be the source but we can’t figure out what brought it onto our property right here in central Los Barriles.  After doing the autopsy and confirming lepto we had the other two dogs tested and my 10yo female tested positive for it!  She is not showing symptoms but the incubation period is 3-22 days.  Symptoms for lepto can parallel ehrlichiosis symptoms (as was Hattie’s case).  A blood test will confirm either bacteria so if you have any questions about the health of your dog, don’t hesitate!  Most importantly, both of my dogs that have contracted lepto had their vaccinations three months ago.  Apparently it is a rare, virulent and dangerous bacteria strain that we could not possibly have known to prepare for.  BUT, if you do catch it soon enough, a round of penicillin can make the difference and even save their life.  Christine Rogers 141-0014 home or 206-669-1675 US cell

a.   Long time resident, Ila Buckley now sadly deceased, started an Annual Blanket Drive to provide blankets to families in El Campamento. Over a few years enough blankets have donated to keep everyone warm at night. This year we are asking for donations of children’s shoes and clothing. Items should be clean and gently used. Surely, many of the part time winter residents and snow birds have a little room in your suitcases to bring some badly needed items. If you’re driving bring whatever you can. There is also a need for large size sheets of cardboard and galvanized sheets to be used for roofing. Some homes have no roof or protection from cold, heat and wind. Sad News:  Last month, George (Jorge) Bergin and long time resident of La Ribera moved on to the other side after battling cancer. Lynda, his wife, left us 8 months prior. If you needed to know about the history or what was happening in La Ribera, Jorge was the man to see. When he first arrived in La Ribera in 1996, there were only a handful of ex-pats. He was an avid fisherman, explorer and prolific writer. I want to thank Melano, Olivia and Dr. Monica for taking care of him until the end. May they Rest In Peace.
