a.  Our community has a critical shortage of housing that is affordable for Mexican medical professionals who move here to provide valuable services to the entire community. Tourists come here for shorter periods of time and budget for the high cost of vacation accommodations. These professionals, while gainfully employed and able to pay rent, cannot afford the rents charged to tourists, especially during peak season.  Please review your plans for the next twelve months. Do you have a vacant, or soon to be vacant, house, casita or RV? Do your friends and neighbors have a similar situation, or are they planning to skip coming down to East Cape next year? b.  Reservation update for Open Mic night on Wednesday:  1)Reservations are always encouraged.  2) If you make a dinner reservation, please plan on arriving no later than  6.50 pm, or your table will be open for walk-ins.  3)  If you make a reservation for let’s say, 8 people, please don’t show up with 12 people expecting seating for the extras.  If you have last minute added guests, please call us and we will try out best to accommodate you. 4) If you reserve a table and cannot make it , please give us the courtesy of a phone call or messenger and cancel your reservation so that we may accommodate other guests. We also have our $50 usd football pool that pays out on every score change during the game, the end of quarter scores, as well as the “good neighbor policy” whereby the four squares that border the quarter winners also get paid. c.  It’s that time of year again!  Baja Shakespeare, our local community theater company,  is offering their 19th annual play on March 8, 9, 10, 11, 13, 14, 15 and 16 at Hotel Buena Vista Beach Resort (Spa).  Our inspirational and locally grown Director, Camilla Ford, has adapted the successful musical, Once Upon a Mattress, to our impeccable Baja Shakespearian standards and made it suitable for our troupe of talented actors and re-titled the work, The Sea Princesa and the Frijole (of course!). This show is guaranteed to be another spectacular hit and the troupe is excited to begin the creative process.

A theatre production of this size and quality does not happen without cost.  Production costs include facility rental, costumes, sets, props, makeup, playbills, marketing, etc. etc. The money raised by ticket sales does not cover the cost of production; therefore, the company also raises money through patron memberships in Friends of Shakespeare.  Benefits of the membership include priority seating (two tickets) at your performance of choice, an invitation to attend the pre-production cast and crew dinner party, your name in the playbill, and the knowledge that you are a super-patron of a long-standing community theater company!  We actually have room for a few new members in our patron group this year, memberships are 120 US Playbills. a.  SNAP and all the pets would like to express our sincere, heartfelt THANK YOU to all the Volunteers who helped with our January 19 spay and neuter clinic.  You successfully cared for 15 cats and 40 dogs.  All of you, the community, Dr. Cristobal and his staff, and especially our sponsors prevented hundreds of unwanted puppies and kitties.  SNAP (spay, neuter & prevention) could not do these free clinics to the Mexican community without your help.  THANK YOU!  Our next clinic will be March 16.

a.  It’s that time of year when we are gearing up for our Baja Wave Camps ! We still have a few spaces left for spring wave camps.  What do the camps entail ?  A Right peeling wave over a sandy bottom for learning to ride waves and improving your skills! Sad News:  JoAnn Hyslop, the founder of Asociacion de Artes and Festival de Artes, passed away in Thousand Oaks, CA at the age of 88 on Jan 15.  Her influence is all around us with the events she started and her creation, East Capers Magazine.  She lived an adventure filled life and can be counted as one of the great personalities of the East Cape Area.  The February issue of East Capers Magazine will have more information.   A celebration of her life will be in  December as her wishes were to return to her beloved Baja!  Details we follow about that as soon as we know them.

a.  We went to the new Repsol gas station here in town today (Saturday) and asked the attendant to fill up our large SUV. He kept telling us to pull forward, much more forward than we are used to, almost so far forward we couldn’t see the pump… While he was filling up our vehicle he asked if we were on vacation or lived here and kept asking my passenger if they spoke Spanish even though I was communicating in Spanish…? Then when he was finished I gave him a 50 pesos tip and he ran my card and I signed the receipt. Driving away I noticed the amount charged was over 400 pesos more than it was supposed to be. I pulled back around and told him to look at the pump and he immediately in English said sometimes the machine doesn’t work right and reached into his own wallet and gave me back 420 pesos! The guy is a blatant thief and you should be extremely careful about getting gas there. I have traveled all over the world and nowhere is there such an effort at gas stations to steal money from customers as I have seen here on the Baja. This has happened at the Chevron near the airport, the Pemex near the airport, the Pemex in San Quintin BC, this event added to all the others, should be a cautionary reminder to watch carefully and to call them on their behavior!! I reported past incidents to corporate and will do the same with this one. I am just trying to save someone from getting ripped off.

a.  The ‘4C’ Boutique Clothing Rummage Sale on February 21^st: We’re postponing this gently-worn clothing sale until next season as the calendar is overflowing with activities!  However, Cortez Rescue would still love your help!  Please can you ask friends, visitors and family to bring 5-10 gently-worn items when they visit?  Dresses, skirts, shorts, shirts, light sweaters. Attractive garments in good shape that you know someone else would love to have! b.  Banking!  We’ve had issues with ATM’S at the Bancomer in LB and now the HSBC ATM in Sorianas in San Jose. This is where you appear to have completed your WITHDRAWL. But NO MONEY comes out. ALWAYS CHECK YOUR BANK ACCOUNT TO MAKE SURE THAT THE MONEY HAS NOT BEEN TAKEN OUT OF YOUR ACCOUNT.  It seems to be more of an issue if you’re using an American or Canadian Credit Union Debit Card.  We are out a substantial amount of money and have been told by our Credit Union in Canada that it will take 3-6 months to have it returned to our account. IF EVER!!!!  Our Credit Union back in Canada was VERY Aware of This issue especially with BANCOMER!  We have talked with the bank manager at Bancomer in LB and he ORIGINALLY told us our money would be returned in 2-10 days. It’s now been over 2 months!
This is a warning to others that use the ATM’s.  CHECK YOUR BANK ACCOUNT AFTER EVERY WITHDRAWAL TRANSACTION!!!!

a.  This afternoon found a key in my ignition of my CanAm quad.  Hadn’t used the quad in three days. Obviously someone jumped over our gate/fence to see if they could steal it before trying to get through our automatic gate. We have a coded ignition so it wasn’t stolen. Live on the road near the communication tower in Agua de la Costa. Keep a watchful eye. This never happened in 10 years.

c.  DISCUSSION – paying taxes:  (1)  Your last issue stated:  “A recent post in BPE mentioned that the “Inapam” discount for property taxes is not allowed in La Ribera. This is the actual case —     The Inapam discount can only be used when the three early filing discounts expire. That is end of March.”  I’m in San Jose and paid my taxes yesterday. I received the 20% for payment in January and 30% more for the Inapam discount.  Why would the payment of taxes be any different in La Ribera?
(2)  Wednesday I paid property taxes in La Ribera and successfully received the 50% Inapam discount.  Bring your original card plus 2 copies front and back.  There were no questions or problems whatsoever.
