LOST-FOUND-FIDO-MORRIS.

a.  When we returned from vacation, a puppy was on our porch.  She’s roughly 8 weeks old, black and tan and looks like a Chihuahua, Dachshund mix. Very sweet, we got her de-fleaed at Dr. Cristobals office.  We just can’t keep her.   We’re in Palo Blanco.  Otherwise I guess we’ll take her to Dr. Gretel.  Numbers are 624 182-2989, 206 734-1077    Little black cutie with tan feet.

I found one on the wall in our bedroom early in the morning I’m so glad I didn’t find it on my lip!  https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.cnn.com/cnn/2017/05/19/health/chagas-kissing-bugs-disease-deaths-underestimated/index.html

MOVIE NIGHT!! Exciting news as East Cape Recycling and Environmental Education presents our last movie of the season “Free Solo“, a thrilling adventure that follows Alex Honnold as he becomes the first person to ever attempt a free solo climb of Yosemite’s 3,000ft high El Capitan Wall. With no ropes or safety gear, it was arguably the greatest feat in rock climbing, and one of the greatest athletic feats in any sport. Winning the 2019 Oscar for Best Documentary, it will have you on the edge of your seat, and will be amazing on our 18″ BIG screen! Watch the trailer here:  https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7775622/videoplayer/vi1009564441.  As an extra end of season Bonus, we will also show “A Reef Reborn”, a short film about our own Cabo Pulmo!
You may place your chairs anytime after 5:30 for a 7:30 start (later due to Daylight Savings time!) at Parque Laguna community park.  We will have our theater style popcorn with real butter and sea salt (vegan version available by request), wine, beer, water and the very popular Kahlua brownies!! This is a fund-raiser that returns 100% to our community and we thank you for your support this season.  See You At The Movies!!     lynnmirassou@gmail.com

DISCUSSIONS – ANSWERS – ANNOUNCEMENTS

a.  Hey Neighbors, Joe and I now announce a project mostly inspired by 4 people: Theresa Comber, Lynn Mirassou, Holly Burgin, and my sister Amanda, all fierce women on the environment. It’s a Facebook Group called Sustainable You (https://www.facebook.com/groups/SustainableYou). We had to create it because we could find nothing else like it. Sustainable You is building to be an active, international working group for sharing, inspiring, and problem-solving on all kinds of environmental challenges from global to local issues like climate change and recycling, right down to personal issues, like hurricane recovery right here in Los Barriles. It takes a lot of voices to make this kind of group really effective. Join us and share it with others you feel might be interested. You’d be amazed at how much good news and innovation there is out there on these issues.  Jennifer  alighton [at] me (dot) com (https://www.facebook.com/groups/SustainableYou)

b.  Phones/Internet in Buenos Aires –   the Buenos Aires area north of Jonathon and west of the main road does not have ‘real’ TelMex lines.   I live there and I want a real land/internet line that can be serviced by TelMex and always works.   Friday, we met with a manager at TelMex in La Paz and he said if you live in that area, you need to email him your request and he will take all the requests to the infrastructure group to prove it is worth the investment.  Please included in your email your name, contact information and address or google screen shot of your location.    His name is Reynaldo Alvarez Molina  Email ramolina@telmex.com     If we all send messages to the one manager he can show them in one listing the large list of line requests for this one area.   Even if you have done this before, please do it again so this one person has your contact number so the list is complete.  They are not putting together all the requests.   Maybe we can get the service  soon, which is inexpensive – $400 peso or less per month!    So, if you live in this neighborhood, please put in your request.   Thanks for the help!  Questions?  thundervalley98178@yahoo.com

c.  Ellen Wylde made a donation to the East Cape Guild in memory of her mother.  I sent her a thank you note.  The Guild has been providing scholarships to help our local students better their lives for the past 21 years.  This is what Ellen had to say:  You are more than welcome. I wish everyone would “pony” up and contribute.  My daughter,  Fiona, went to the LB school every winter for 4 months from the time she was 4 years old to 9th grade. She is now 22. She became bi-lingual, and bi-cultural as well. All her best friends from her class, are in college in La Paz and Guadalajara, most of them first generation in their family’s to go to college. I know 7 of the kids and they are studying engineering, architecture, nursing, dental school.  Many thanks for your efforts.  Sincerely,  Ellen Wylde

DISCUSSIONS – ANSWERS – ANNOUNCEMENTS

a.  The first 500 pictures taken of the entertainment at Festival de Artes are now available at www.eastcapearts.com  You can find the photo gallery on the home page and the Festival de Artes page.  More photos and video to come!

b.  The auction for New Creations Orphanage has come and gone but the feel good memories will last a long time.  My heart is full with immense gratitude for all of those who offered items and services, for the volunteers who gave their all, for LaPlaya who gave their all, for the Lack Family who gave their all and of course for the 200+ who attended, and supported the event. It was a huge success.  Final numbers still to be determined, as some winners are still expected to claim their treasures, so if this is you, pls come to the Wine Shop – Wed-Sun 12-6 PM.  Will post final numbers raised asap.  Approx.$10k USD. Thank you, gracias, danke sehr, merci, arigato….in any language.  Great job to all who made this happen.  We are each rewarded as well as the recipients. Make it an outrageous year ahead. Serbyou in 2020

c.  Feel Good News!  Our Fiona does it again!

d.  Shake down on the beach Tuesday, went fishing, launched off looney loop like always, when we came back in our Mexican friend was backing the trailer down and a policia on a quad stopped him, told him no vehicles on the beach, wanted money, needless to say didn’t get it, finally left after about 15 min. Was a policia estal, may not be spelling that correctly.  (OK unsigned)

e.  Via the Ventana View:  While there are more than 325 distinct hummingbird species in the world, La Ventana/El Sargento is home to only four. Ninety-nine percent of our hummers are Costa’s hummingbirds, but we also get the odd Anna’s and Rufous hummingbirds and there are special habitats with rock nettle in our area where one can see the endemic (only found here) Xantu’s hummingbird. Here are some interesting factoids about hummers. Weighing less than a nickel, they have about 1,000 to 1,500 feathers, the fewest number in the bird world. They can fly in all directions, flapping their wings between 50 to 200 times a second and reaching speeds of 60 mph in a dive. With the passing of each minute, their heart beats 1,200 times and they take 250 breaths. Their eggs are the tiniest in the bird world, smaller than a jelly bean. While hummers lick our provided sugar water at the rate of 10 to 15 times per second, they do need to eat small insects and spiders for protein. david.bird@mcgill.ca  (I’m guessing if they’re in La Ventana we have them also?)

e.  Via the Ventana View:  A wonderful story of some local people:

EVENTS

a.  Recycling Day is TODAY! You may bring your prepared recyclable materials to East Cape Recycling between 9-11am and a smiling volunteer will direct you to the proper area for each material.  Please check our website for directions and what we accept: www.eastcaperecycling.com
NOTE: We are having a SPECIAL collection of clean, ordinary white plastic grocery bags! Annette Kaiser will be there gathering the bags for “Mats For Homeless Children”.  Please bring all the clean bags you have been saving for this wonderful project.
If you can stay for an hour and BE one of our smiling VOLUNTEERS, wear a hat, gloves and close-toes sturdy shoes.  We LOVE volunteers, new and veterans…we cannot exist without you!  Thanks for your support for a cleaner, safer community and beaches!  lynnmirassou@gmail.com

b.  Semana Santa here in Los Barriles is April 18th – 20th.  This is a celebration/festival of sports for the Holy Week.  There are volleyball tournaments and other fun and games for everyone – this year with more of a festival atmosphere.  One new addition this year is a boat light parade.  This ‘light parade’ is April 18th at approximately 8pm.  Mayor Luis is inviting everyone to get out their paddle board, kayak, zodac boats, tin boats or canoe and decorate it up with lights and join the parade along the shore. There will be a prize for the best decorated/lite boat….. so get your thinking caps on!  Think of the festival of lights boat parades like in Seattle, Newport Beach and Lake Havasu…without the yachts!!!  The ‘festival’ grounds are from Don Pepe to Costa Brava.  There will be live music before the boat parade.   Parking available on the beach – in a marked area.  Watch for details on FB and the BPE.  Posters are around town with more details too.  Get planning your lite entry!

c.  This is International Dark Sky Week, an event to help individuals protect the wonders of the night sky.   Almost 20 light pollution reports have been posted so far from the Cape Region by concerned citizens. The data shows the night sky is darker in El Sargento and La Ventana as a result of new shielded LED street lights. However, it also shows that some porch and security lights are making stargazing impossible for nearby neighbors. Read about what you can do to make you and your neighbor’s night sky darker here.

Puppy and Cat- lost and found!

a.  Lost puppy. Local Mexican family has lost their new puppy, about 10 weeks old. No collar, cute little guy, white with some tan markings, maybe 10 lbs. Last seen off the Agua de la Costa road near the Telmex tower, cruising with his pit bull buddy. Contact Richard 435-640-0219, 624-142-8122, bajachardo@gmail.com

b.  Are you missing your cat? This cat showed up recently, hungry and afraid. It seems like it is someone’s pet as it has become a little friendlier over the past few days and I was finally able to get close enough for a picture (through our window.) We live in Las Brisas area, north of town, but will be leaving soon. I hope this cat belongs to someone!
