h. Via the Gringo Gazette: This weekend beginning on Thursday, July 18, the largest concentration of Bikers will be in Cabo for their 15th Annual International meeting. Hundreds of bikes from the U.S., Canada, and Mexico will be joining our local bikers for tours to San Jose, La Paz, Todos Santos and other rural areas. The concentration ends Saturday night with a loud party with live music at the parking lot of the Cultural Pavilion in the Cabo Marina.

a. Our summer camp motto is ‘Enriching the lives of children through recreation and environmental education’ and we are! Two weeks now of fun, friendship, feathered exploration, sports and swimming with 100 kids in our community’s ‘Curso de Verano’ program. Birds are an indicator species of environmental health and this year’s theme is ‘Ninos, spread your wings and fly – Protect Mother Nature, Protect Her Birds’! With color coded tshirts with bird wings stretch across their chests, each child received binoculars and they are watching, listening, learning and tuned in to Mother’s Nature’s birds. With no decimating hurricanes for a few years, the local bird population is abundant with white winged doves, gorgeous red cardinals, bright yellow orioles, blue jays, little red songbirds and they fill the skies and trees. We’re finding nests and babies and even the littlest 6-year-olds hold quiet and still with their binoculars trained on birds. The oldest 12-year-olds can recognize a bird just by its song. Biologist David Curiel Cante has infused the ninos with a newfound appreciation and love of birds – it’s contagious! One week to go including the recycling competition. b. Some of your favorite local businesses have helped bridge the summer camp funding gap when the city’s budget portion fell short. Local friends and contractors Luis Morales Castro with TK Construction and Antonio Rochin with JMT Construction started off our funding challenge and Jimmy Diaz with CanDoo Rentals stepped in as well. Our newly opened bank ‘Intercam’ was happy to join and support their new community. Lynn Rose of the Lynn Rose Tournaments for nearly two decades has supported kid’s programs and contributed. Victoria’s Sunny Dresses held a week-long special, donating 20% of all sales. Coco’s Coffee & Ice Cream at the Mercado helped. The summer program is free to families in part to your help raising funds through movie nights and recycling with East Cape Recycling & Environmental Education. Lead by Chris Courtright, we are proud to team up with the Art Association whose deep commitment to our community’s kids has been ongoing for 20 years. c. Volunteers are the backbone of the Curso de Verano Summer Program. For the swim portion, creating a love of the water, teaching the children to swim and making sure they are safe is all balanced together by incredible people in the water and on the pool decks. Four bilingual swim instructors Kim Bolin, Shelley Hayden, Ian Sanders & Felix Gonzalez are the program leaders. In the pool as instructor helpers are Ben Ballay, Keara Ballay, Simone Mills, Robin Neal, Isabel Flores, Theresa Comber, Sharon Kirschner, Andy Jentzsch, Edie Cascias. Watchful eyes on the deck are Kay Uekert, Chris Schraefel, Lori Stelzer, Tessa Nisbet. Swimming wouldn’t happen without the use of these pools donated by Priscilla’s Watts, Don & Lynn Burns, Resort at East Cape & Palmas de Cortez. Our high school helpers performing their social services obligation are Samuel Lucero, Marco Manriques , Ivan Rosas. Invaluable interns are Lupita Araiza, Bety Araiza and Guera Silva. The birdhouses from water bottles craft project was expertly managed by Nathan Gauthier with great help from Julian Castro, Ronda Johnson & her husband, Chris Courtright, Jamie Kepler, Jenn Petitcler, Lori Stelzer.
