e.  Water. We have a major problem with the water supply north of the arroyos. I’m in Esmeralda and for fifteen years we have gotten water from early evening until eleven or twelve the next day. Then all day on Sunday. Now we only get water on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday from early morning until evening. That’s it. During those hours everyone waters their yard so the water slows down to a trickle in the afternoon. I’ve run out of water twice in the last four days. Once for over twenty-four hours. Not fun. My garden is drying up.
I talked with the water crew and they said in order to fix this they need to replace all the pipes with larger ones and then a new larger pump. That’s not even being planed. Yet they are still issuing new building permits. If your planning on building a home here you better plan on hiring a water truck to fill your tanks. I’m adding another water tank now but I don’t know if the city water will be enough to fill them both in the little time I have water arriving on the property. I may need a water truck also.
Our little town is outgrowing its infrastructure quickly.  Sincerely, Ken E

f. Fourteen years ago, the inspiration for the summer program came from Francis Olachea, our former mayor, and she worked tirelessly to assure its success. The past few years the backbone of the children’s summer program has been managed by Maria Flores and Obdullia Mendoza, co-directors of our community’s DIF program. DIF oversees social services and these two women have hearts as big as Baja for the citizens of the East Cape. They attend the needs of the youngest to the oldest in our community, assuring everyone receives help and no one slips through without being cared for. They also juggle the balls and spin the plates of this very complicated three weeks. Baseball, pickleball, volleyball, swimming, crafts, dance, art, yoga – 100 kids, 100 families, volunteers, drivers, coaches, teachers, spaces, fields – it’s a juggling act they do with expertise and a smile. East Cape Recycling & Environmental Education is proud to be their partner.

More than 1.75 tons of recyclables were collected during the three-week competition during Curso de Verano 2019! With excitement and anticipation 12 winners heard their names called and discovered that they will be joining us for a full day of exploration and adventure as we go to ‘El Serpentario’ in La Paz, a remarkable animal rescue and rehabilitation center. We are also going to the Natural History Museum to learn more about Baja’s unique birds, flora and fauna. All 100 children in this year’s program received their own binoculars so they can continue their personal discovery of Mother Nature in flight. This season’s 49 new children also received their own mask and snorkel so they can explore reefs and reef fish in our unique Sea of Cortez.

The three-week Environmental Education program “Enriching the lives of 100 children through recreation and environmental education and 100% free for families” has just completed. The environmental understanding and impact on our community’s children is profound. It’s a joy and an honor to participate and experience the joy, fun, friendship, feathered friends, swimming and snorkeling. Enjoy the experience yourself at our East Cape Recycling Baja Facebook page.  Theresa Comber
