g.  ** Los Barriles Food Bank Update (March 28 2020) **Thank you everyone from the Mayor, community and business leaders for the food and monetary donations so far. This is a true community effort and we have been so touched by the response to date. While the stocks are building steadily, we still need money and food donations. PLEASE NOTE THAT MONEY TRANSFER DETAILS HAVE CHANGED BELOW. Here’s an update of where we are:

Eligibility/Needs Analysis – the Delegacion has already started on an assessment of households. It is right that the authorities are leading on a fair and appropriate assessment as they know the local population, the households etc. We will cross reference with existing systems in town to make sure there is no doubling up.

Food Stocks – the team from Joe’s Deli worked late into the night to do an audit of what we have already including 79 bags of rice, 105 bags/cans of beans, 164 cartons of milk – see photo which doesn’t really do it justice. When the Delegacion has completed the needs analysis, then we can look at how much we are missing and where we need to build stocks. We will then be able to announce a start date.

Staple Items – we are working towards a bank of staples including: beans, rice long-life milk, flour, sugar, cooking oil. When the Los Barriles Food Bank opens, we will add eggs to that list and also the additional foodstuffs that people have been donating.

Distribution – we are finalizing a system to distribute the food which we can share with you in a few days. Some have asked about the government’s responsibility. They are not making any assessment for at least another two weeks. Then we have no idea when they will start to distribute foods – if at all. So the burden lies on us to at least fill any gaps by taking action now.

Good News! – we have just secured a ton (literally a ton!) of beans from a local area supplier at an unbelievably low price thanks to our Mayor’s efforts. This is great news. The team continues to liaise with local suppliers and wholesalers to get the best prices possible in order to make the money work harder.

**IMPORTANT** If you have people asking you about whether they can get food from Los Barriles Food Bank, please refer them to the Delegacion to register – online during out of office hours. Do not send them to any of the collection points around town.

Donating Money
Send Venmo and Paypal to Jeane Harkleroad (who was previous Rotary President in case you don’t recognise her name!) at jhark29@gmail.com· Transferwise – https://transferwise.com/ Please email gibson.ian@outlook.com for an account number, email and name.

· Cash – cash is also be accepted. Please make your donation at Joe’s Deli.
· Wire Transfer – Please email gibson.ian@outlook.com to get the wiring instructions.

Donating Food – Please donate dried and canned foods: beans, rice long-life milk, canned veg/fruit, flour, sugar, cooking oil, cans of tomatoes, tuna etc. and leave them at the drop-off points – La Playa Restaurant, Bahia Real Estate or Café Encinalito (Sasha’s Café).
“Buy & Donate” – at Joe’s Deli and La Pitahaya (Veggie Ladies), when you buy a can or dried food, buy an additional one and then after paying for it, donate it by placing it into the Los Barriles Food Bank bin.

valuable information or who are raising money for people in need.  Those

b.  You may or may not know that yesterday the Mexican government Closed all ports in Baja from Cabo to Ensenada. This statement also made it clear there would be no boats in or out. No recreational sports fishing and no commercial fishing. The article in the Mexican paper said that it is in effect until further notice but I suspect 60 days. The only ships in would be emergency vessels. A bad omen and of course will crush any tourism for this summer. 2 months would also probably mean cancellation of the Bisbee but I have not spoken with Wayne yet. This is from the Mexican paper in Cabo directly.  Stay healthy and inside,  All the closures are both Sea of Cortez and Pacific sides.

COVID INFO

a.  3/26/20: East Cape Health Center today we have 8 cases of Covid-19 in Cabo, most from the same wedding party almost 3 weeks ago. Another couple flew in from US and became ill once they arrived. They are contacting anyone who they made contact with. They have now restricted incoming flights. Please encourage your friends or family coming in from US or elsewhere to comply to the 2 week “stay home” policy to limit our exposure here in southern Baja.  If you have plans to go shopping stop by our pharmacy for mask and gloves. Our clinics, lab and pharmacy will remain open. We have cleaning crews disinfecting the clinics before and after patients. We are taking all the recommended precautions with screening at the door before entering the clinic. We have the hazmat suits for our own protection.. Stay tuned… charlene.wenger@gmail.com

b.  Dear Friends, and Patients  –  Letter from our Dr. Dennis O’Brien

There are currently scads of information on social media, television etc. regarding Corona virus in the US and abroad.  Most of it is useful and requires the application of common sense and action.  Below, I’d like to share a few thoughts with you that will hopefully put your mind at ease.
Corona viruses have been around for a while.   SARS , from a few years back, is a corona virus.  This present virus, COVID19,  just like any other virus, will not respond to antibiotics as there is no cell wall to destroy (unlike a bacteria).
So………..what do we do?  There are many things we can do to decrease the likelihood of contracting a viral infection, being a carrier, or both.
All of the precautions regarding hand washing , direct contact, avoiding large crowds and public places are good things to practice and make good common sense and remember:  YOU CAN BE SYMPTOM FREE AND STILL BE A CARRIER.  That said, let’s all be responsible community members.
Good over all self care is also a must right now.   Simple things such as staying hydrated, avoiding sugar of all kinds (  and  booze), rest, avoiding smoking of any kind, avoiding over exposure of sun, minimizing stress, avoiding over exercise and avoiding over eating  are a good place to start.  Perhaps the best single self care item is AVOIDING FEAR in  all its many sources.  It has been well demonstrated  that stress lowers an immune response and this  is even  more important now.
Regarding an immune response, the following will be helpful for us all in moving forward.
Getting information: As mentioned, there is a lot of information out there  about COVID19.  Your best bet is to listen to the experts in the field of immunology and epidemiology. To date, information coming from hopeful  drug companies and politicians have been  incorrect and misleading in my observation .
That said, Mainstream medicine and Big Pharma are planning an OUTSIDE IN  approach to treating this.  That is, recommending drugs that have not been tested for safety and efficacy, as well as massive vaccinations.  The problem with OUTSIDE IN is that even if it produced good clinical outcomes, which it may or may not,  it will not be available for at  least a year  from now and by then the damage will already have been done.
INSIDE OUT works in a different way.  What it does is to activate your own immune response from the inside, allowing your own immune players to selectively fight off an invader of any kind.
How do we achieve that?  The self care tips above are a good place to start.
Next, (and oversimplified), we have to activate certain white blood cell types known as PHAGOCYTES.  What they do is patrol your body from cell to cell, and when they detect that there is an invader, they engulf the invader and destroy it. For this to happen the phagocyte needs the triad of Soluble Calcium, real Vitamin C (NOT ASCORBIC ACID), and essential fatty acids. Soluble Calcium is needed to get the white blood cells mobile and patrolling.  Essential fatty acids are needed to get Calcium out of the bloodstream and into the tissues and thus, into the phagocyte so that it can be mobile and get to work where it is needed.  Real Vitamin C  is what allows a phagocyte to have the  knock out punch it needs to eliminate an invader. (Note:  ascorbic acid is the antioxidant portion of the Vitamin C molecule and is  less that 5% by weight of the complex Vitamin C molecule. To say that ascorbic acid is Vitamin C is like saying that a steering wheel is a car.  Don’t get bamboozled!).
The triad I have used for the last 29 years regarding viruses is made by  Standard Process.
1.  Calcium lactate tablets   9 per day   3-3-3
2,  Cataplex C tablets          6-9 per day
3.  Cataplex F tablets           6-9 per day
Standard  Process has recently started a program called PATIENT DIRECT, which gives patients the ability to order directly from them and deliver to your door.  Please let me know if you have any questions about  this.
Back to COVID-19.  We have to remember that microorganisms such as this are NOT PREDATORS, THEY ARE SCAVENGERS.  That said, they will thrive on
dead, raw, irritated, devitalized  tissue.  So……….  if you  are interested in the INSIDE OUT principle, the above information will be helpful to you.
It is estimated  that the majority of humans on the planet will be exposed to COVID 19
within a year.  In the US,  unlike China and S Korea, it will be more difficult to contain  for a variety of reasons and will continue to spread over a longer period of time, increasing  our odds of exposure.  That said, we as individuals have limited options regarding  exposure to COVID-19.  What we do have is the ability to  make good choices for ourselves and our families by raising our vitality FROM THE INSIDE OUT.
If you have any questions about any of the above information, feel free to contact me at densaidyes at aol.com.  Please feel free to forward this article to others.  My Best to you and your families  Dr Dennis O’Brien

b. East Cape Health Center Update – As we continue to track the CoronaVirus we are researching the mixed stories for validity. Today I learned of  5 cases of Covid -19 that have been identified in Cabo. All tested in Hospital H+ and now recovering in their hotel. The group flew in together for a wedding and 2 became ill almost 2 weeks ago, and the other 3 have been recently tested after developing symptoms. Fortunately, the southern baja has been lucky but those coming in from the US or elsewhere may bring it down to us. The Mexican President is looking the other way and not imposing restrictions, as elsewhere in the world. View this web page and see how this is expected to run its course.  https://www.nytimes.com/video/world/americas/100000007049738/as-coronavirus-approaches-mexico-president-looks-other-way.html?action=click&gtype=vhs&version=vhs-heading&module=vhs&region=title-area&cview=true&t=5

For daily tracking log into https://coronavirus.bcs.gob.mx/  under Casos in Mexico click the green box and a window will appear describing all the known positive cases in the different states in Mexico.  We now have masks and hand sanitizer ( bring your own pump bottle) for sale in our pharmacy. – charlene.wenger@gmail.com

c.  Something I would like to share with everyone, based on my previous experience as a restaurant/bar owner: the state health inspector always insisted on us having a bucket of water containing 5% bleach. This was used to frequently rinse our bar towels used to wipe bar and kitchen surfaces. This simple solution kills ALL bacteria and viruses, yet is mild enough that employees didn’t need to wear gloves (thus a bonus as they were keeping their hands sanitized).     Bartenders, money handlers, food prep employees all benefit from using these sanitized towels, thus having bacteria and virus-free hands probably 99%+ of the time.     I suggest all of us consider keeping this solution around our homes, as it is an effective killer of bacteria AND the Corona virus.
Ron & Lynda, Baja Cleaning Crew – BajaLynda315@gmail.com

d. Be Aware:  In the past five days I have spoken to six people who had just arrived on international flights.  Of the two single persons and two couples only one person was self- quarenteening themselves.  A local shop owner had to ask another couple to leave the shop after finding out they had just arrived on an international flight and decided to go about town shopping

COVID INFO

a. Smokey´s Update – During these difficult and trying times our team at Smokey´s is instituting some changes in an effort to promote sterilization and responsible social distancing. For instance, will now have some seating available outside under event tents and we are also spacing barstools farther apart. We have installed a handwash station on the patio and we are asking all customers to wash their hands thoroughly upon entry and our employees are doing the same every 20 minutes.
Further, we are proud to be the first customer for a new local business run by Ron and Lynda Tracewell, the Baja Cleaning Crew, which specializes in cleaning and sterilizing the floors and walls of local homes and businesses with their new specialized machines. Calling the Tracewells is something we should all consider at this point in time.
Due to current circumstances, we are now forced to limit our daily work force in an effort to provide work to ALL of our employees. But with that, we have doubled our cleaning crew from two to four employees per day for four hours. That´s a win-win. A well maintained sterile environment and continued work for our employees. In addition, Smokey´s is now offering and encouraging to go orders for food and drink. And we are now offering free home delivery as well. For to go orders or delivery please call local land line 624 141 0294, or text US cell 858 231 1358.

In the event that the government requires that bars and restaurants close, we will remain open on a to go and delivery basis only. And our customers will continue to be welcome to enjoy Happy Hour in our parking lot in a socially responsible manner.

We wish all in our community continued health and well being. God Bless us all.  Chris Moyers

d.  In an effort to keep Los Barriles, Buena Vista and all of our great East Cape Villages healthy and happy, Suzie’s Consignment will be closing Friday (Mar 20th) at 5 pm.   April 3rd we will reevaluate the situation and let you know what direction we are going.  We apologize for any inconvenience, but the health of our clients, customers and our dedicated employees is very important to us.  Thank you for your patience.  Keep smiling and keep washing those hands!!

e.  Solutions Clinica de Belleza – Under the current situation that the world is in right now, I’ve decided to take precaution and close my business for the remainder of the season. For those clients who have upcoming appointments this next week I’m truly sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused you but I feel this is necessary for all of us to stay safe and virus free.       Connie Heinen – permsolutions@aol.com

f.  Asociacion de Artes has made the decision that we will not  print out our April – May 2020 issue of the East Capers Magazine.  WE WILL HAVE AN ONLINE ISSUE ONLY.  This decision was made because of the amount of folks leaving town, and we  feel it would not be the best way to spend our advertiser’s dollars to print a copy that will reach a very small audience.   What we are doing is, all advertisers that paid for the April-May 2020 issue will be in the October – November 2020 issue for free.  That is, your paid issue will carry over to the first issue of the 2020-21 season.   This will also help with your bottom line as we all know the season ended this year 2 months early.  The online issue will reach thousands and will not cost anything but some of our time.  Your ad’s will be in the online issue as it would have been in the printed issue.   We will aggressively advertise the online issue. We appreciate your continued support with our magazine and look forward to a great 2020 -21 season!
We will get through this new ‘world’ we live in and hope all of us in our little corner of the world are safe and healthy.  And everyone who enjoys our Baja paradise, think of our local neighbors that will have a very big struggle with their season and livelihoods ending two months early.  Please do what you can to help them out too. Please keep your articles coming for those of you that were writing them.  We still will have an issue, just not in print form!!!  Thank you for your support. – eastcapersmagazine@gmail.com

g.  As you may know the 9th Annual Feeding the Hungry Fashion Show was cancelled due to reasons related to the current Coronavirus Pandemic.  The worst part of this cancellation is the effect on those that really need the additional food voucher help purchasing the food that they need.  We had switched to a spring fashion show this year because the summer is when the vouchers are needed the most and many of the gringos are not here in the summer months to hire them.  The Feeding the Hungry Fashion Show organizers still have the desire to help those that really need food the most and want to be a conduit in providing that help.
The Los Barriles Food Bank has a plan in place to use donated food items.  Our greatest need is financial to help the neediest families in the area.  We are always amazed by the willingness of the local community to help by the cash that they donate to the Feeding the Hungry Fashion Show program.  With the cash donations we purchase food vouchers from Chapitos that we distribute to the neediest in our community.  With those vouchers they can purchase things they need like: fruits, vegetables, diapers, medicine, or bread.  Every family’s needs are different.
The cash raised through past fashion shows has been the primary way that we have been able to help the local people.  This season, with the fashion show cancelled, has been a very painful reminder to us that we can’t do it alone, but we really rely on the members of this community to help make it all happen.  Donations of cash can be deposited at Intercam Bank in the name of Harriet Purkey.  Cash in both USD and Mexican Pesos are very welcome.  For checks please contact us for instructions at one of the phone numbers listed below.  If you would rather not go to Intercam Bank, we would be glad to meet you in town.  If you are in the USA, or Canada and want to donate by check, call, or email, for instructions or more information.
For more information and/or instructions:  Phone: Ben or Harriet Purkey 624-141-0339 Mexico, 541-854-5303 USA   Ben’s Mexico cell 624-177-9881   Email: purkeybh@gmail.com
