a. Los Barriles Food Bank Update: 1 August 2020 – Apologies for the recent silence but it has been a busy few weeks as we have adapted how we operate in line with COVID-19 guidance. We want to reassure everyone that we have been carefully managing the funds that we raised from our amazing donors. As a result, the good news is that we believe we can continue now into mid October but we will reassess at the end of August. The core team (Joe, Jeane, Emma, Ian) are the only ones who set the budget, have access to the money and manage the suppliers. We have seen a reduction in the number of families that we have been helping out. While some businesses have re-opened, we are now getting to the stage in town where other businesses will have to close because of the peak summer weeks when it is quiet. As people haven’t had enough time to save up money for this period, we are expecting that the numbers of people requiring help from the Los Barriles Food Bank will rise again.
We have planned for this and thanks to our great volunteers, we are able to continue to provide food. We are now setting up collection stations in areas which has gone very well. The majority in the community are observing and respecting the rules – masks, social distancing and minimal contact as well as washing hands. Our rule – no mask no food.

Well not so quiet, after two failed attempts resulting in two broken crates, Enrique picked up Callado and got into the back of S.N.A.P.’s taxi transport car to head to Dr. Cristobal’s office to remove two of his ‘treasures’ that he did not want to give up. Silvia Masis and I have continued with S.N.A.P.’s spay and neuter program since the shutdown of clinics in March. Callado is number 215 with more scheduled appointments this week and next week. Cortez Rescue is excited to announce that we are looking for the following positions to start in Oct/Nov 2020: 2 board directors to sit on our 501 (c)3 US board and 4 Cortez Rescue Center volunteers. We are saying goodbye to Stacy and Bee who have worked tirelessly over the past years and are now stepping down to pursue other interests local to them in the US. We thank them from the bottom of our hearts for their commitment.
