  3. Baja Night Sky – Star of Bethlehem
    The closest conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn in almost 800 years occurs this month. One this close will not happen again until 2080. Jupiter and Saturn are giant gas planets out beyond Mars. Saturn takes almost 29.5 years to circle the sun. If the two worlds start together in the night sky, Jupiter speeds around the sun in 11.9 years. In 7.7 years more, Jupiter catches Saturn. Since the planets are not in the same plane, one is usually a few degrees below the other when they pass. Go outside about half an hour to one hour after sunset. Look two fists above the SW horizon for very bright Jupiter. Saturn is just two finger widths away from Jupiter at its upper left, but it is closing in on Jupiter for a “great conjunction” on December 21. On that night, the two planets will be the closest they have been in the night sky (they are actually almost 200,000,000 miles apart) since March 4, 1226. Genghis Kahn had just defeated Chinese troops in Western China. On that evening, all five visible planets sparkled in the SW sky. When the great conjunction of that year occurred on March 4, Kahn consulted his astronomer, who told him the alignment meant he should make peace and return home. a.  The state of Baja California Sur has the second highest testing rate in the nation, per 100,000 habitants, but it also has the second highest infection rate in the nation, only second to Mexico City.  The governor, although himself recovering from COVID19, has emphasized that his government believes in science, follows WHO guidelines for testing, testing and more testing. As of November 20th, the state of Baja California Sur has the lowest mortality rate per COVID infected patient in the country. This is all good news, however as a third wave of cases is expected in Mexico we still need to be extremely cautious.
