  1. Windows 11 is finally ready for public download and is available in most new computers. What’s new? Under the hood it’s pretty much the same as Windows 10 with some shinny chrome and fins (remember the cars in the 50’s). I will wait at least 6 months before I download and install. I like to wait for everyone else to report bugs and for Microsoft to issue at least one update. The other advantage to waiting will be the addition of Android Apps that are currently used on phones. Believe it or not there are some programs that are released only as apps and not available on full operating systems. If you’re buying a new computer with Windows 11 pre installed, it will be fully optimized for your new computer. The biggest change that you will see immediately is the “start menu” will be in the center. Stay tuned for further developments.

Starlink update. Starlink is the newest satellite internet system using a huge number of low earth satellites providing high speed with low latency and no data caps.  In English:  Fast and very good.   Starlink has just announced a “density limit” on all early subscribers. That means there will be a limit to the number of users in a given area. No exact details as yet. Density limits may change as more satellites are put in orbit. Starlink is out of Beta and ready for the public. I did go to the web site, it recognized my address in Los Barriles and said service would be available in 2021. This been said, there are some vehicles which will not be accepted: A) Vehicles that were not manufactured in  Canada or USA. B) Contraband vehicles which are vehicles that were temporally imported but not returned to the USA when it was time to do so (10 Years from the time the temp. importation was done). C) Vehicles which were once in a fire or flood.   1. Windows 11 is finally ready for public download and is available in most new computers. What’s new? Under the hood it’s pretty much the same as Windows 10 with some shinny chrome and fins (remember the cars in the 50’s). I will wait at least 6 months before I download and install. I like to wait for everyone else to report bugs and for Microsoft to issue at least one update. The other advantage to waiting will be the addition of Android Apps that are currently used on phones. Believe it or not there are some programs that are released only as apps and not available on full operating systems. If you’re buying a new computer with Windows 11 pre installed, it will be fully optimized for your new computer. The biggest change that you will see immediately is the “start menu” will be in the center. Stay tuned for further developments.

Starlink update. Starlink is the newest satellite internet system using a huge number of low earth satellites providing high speed with low latency and no data caps.  In English:  Fast and very good.   Starlink has just announced a “density limit” on all early subscribers. That means there will be a limit to the number of users in a given area. No exact details as yet. Density limits may change as more satellites are put in orbit. Starlink is out of Beta and ready for the public. I did go to the web site, it recognized my address in Los Barriles and said service would be available in 2021.   15. Cell Phones Season 1 Episode 4. Whether you’re driving down Mex Hwy 1 or Mex 5, you will pass through sections without Cell coverage. If you are using Google Maps to track your progress, you can download maps ahead of time to store in your mobile device. You can’t download all of Baja at once, so you will download overlapping segments of “off line maps”. Even in areas of cell coverage that will save data downloads of current maps since they are already in the phone. Downloads are done through the Menu, Off Line Maps.

    On a serious note, look carefully at your cell phone for evidence of battery expansion and failure. As lithium ion batteries age, they can begin to expand, delaminate the screen and crack the case. Those changes can be subtle and require close inspection to detect failure. Another symptom is inability to hold a charge. If the screen has delaminated and case has cracked even slightly, it may become a fire hazard. Generally, the cell phone manufacturer will warranty the phone even after the normal warranty times. Seriously, if the battery expands to a certain point, it can catch fire. When a lithium battery catches fire, it supplies it’s own oxygen which means it’s impossible to extinguish with normal methods. I have had several phones in that expansion scenario. The batteries can be replaced and you can continue to use the phone. Ipads or any lithium ion battery powered device can have the same problem.

Sad News- Robert A (Bob) Bloomfield took his last flight surrounded by family on Oct 8th in Eagle,Idaho.He was 97 years young, and his mind and spirit were with him to the very end. Bob was a part time resident of LB, on the hill at Verdugo’s with honors, for the fact that he had spent many Springs on the sea wall in the mid 70’s there, before there were hotels on the site. He eventually wound up at his beach front palapa at Costa Brava, where he welcomed all with his hospitality and treasured Margaritas. Bob was a decorated Navy fighter pilot, having flown over 250 missions in the S Pacific during WWII, having received 3 Distinguished Flying Crosses.  Born and raised on the east coast, Bob migrated to Sun Valley, Idaho in 1972,  where he was a cowboy, hunter,back country pilot, golfer and father to his 7 children, grandfather to 13, and great grandfather to 6.
Bob was a fabulous story teller, and his sense of humor was second to none. He was a fixture at Otro Vez for Monday night football, an avid reader, and a great Bridge player. He flipped burgers at the big art fair for many years, and made many Baja friends during his many winters there. He will be missed. DISCUSSIONS – ANSWERS – ANNOUNCEMENT

  1. Cell Phones – Season 1 Episode 3. I hate to read stories of lost cell phones. If you can’t find your cell, there are some steps to take immediately. If you have a Fruit Phone (excuse me, an Iphone), go to any computer and search for “Find My Iphone”. You will need to sign-in with your Icloud credentials (aka. Itunes or Apple screen name and passcode). As long as your lost phone has a charge and a data connection, you can see where the phone happens to be. If you suspect that it’s stolen, you can use that same site to “brick” the phone (disable it). If you have an android phone, search for “Find my Android Phone”. Same procedures apply. If you are in the Apple system, you can buy an Apple Air Tag to attach to the phone. That will help you located the phone using Bluetooth. If you are out of Bluetooth range, anyone else who comes within range will report the location to you. Come to think of it, that might work on your expensive ATV/UTV.

    You probably have a lot of important photos on your phone. I highly recommend that you install Google Photos and/or Amazon Photo. Those sites will back up your photos for free. If you loose your phone, you will always have your pictures.

    On the drive south I use an app called Life360. That allows select friends to monitor my progress as long as I have a data connection. Your friends can opt out of the GPS tracking but I feel better knowing that someone knows where to find me. Life360 works on Apple or Android.
