  1.   Zona Tranquila Update: We’re halfway to our $8500 fundraising goal in just a bit more than three weeks. Los Barriles’ Mayor Francisco “Pancho” Silva is 100% behind the program. He says all people, seasonal guests, second homeowners, full time residents and the Mexican population have a responsibility to protect our environment.Los Barriles’ Zofemat representatives are 100% behind the Zona Tranquila program. They’ll remove existing beach signs with a conflicting message. A Zofemat Federal Law tenet calls all to be part of the society and stand up and protect the beaches. They believe 7 mph/11 km is our best chance for success.The quad rental companies are completely leaning in. They are supporting our branding and will apply the Zona Tranquila beach speed of 7 mph/11km to their rental vehicles. Some are providing funding.With the effectiveness of many Zona Tranquila ‘impressions’, it’s awareness & information we are creating. The signage is underway, all printed pieces are ordered. It’s a push! We need the balance of the funding. My wallet went missing today (3/24) between payment at the front registers at Chapitos (at around 2:30) and returning to my home.  I don’t believe that I dropped it or that anyone could have removed it from my pocket as I carried a box out of Chapitos but that appears to be the only possibility as I have checked everything else.   1. Sad News: Don Wisdom died on Sunday, March 13. He was 94.  He and Donna had a home on the beach in Hermosa Vista for more than 10 years and were active in East Cape Guild and other local groups of Los Barriles area.  They loved their time here.  Don was a civil Engineer and among other achievements designed the beautiful Boise city fountain which is a tourist attraction there. They left Los Barriles to return to their home in Boise, Idaho where they both had lived all their lives. Donna remains in their home there with family and friends nearby. (Yes he was one of the originals, Cheryl)

  3. I copied this from FaceBook: Alert!!! My partner had his wallet solen in the parking lot behind Chapitos on 3/11. A man came up behind him and told him he had something on his shorts. The man proceeded to wipe on/off oil all over the back of his shorts before Jim could stop him and lited his wallet out of the back pocket. By the time Jim turned around the man was long gone.

Like all disasters when they first occur, rumors spread like wildfire and it took a while for the disaster to settle down before the actual damage could be ascertained. One of our members; Rotarian and 2-time past president Josefina Ruiz, was born and raised in Santiago. She’s been able to communicate with Santiago leaders to get a true picture of the actual damage done to the community.Initially the estimated loss was rumored to be over 40 homes. Well, as the smoke settled we got the good news — if there is ever any good news to losses like these, yet 5 homes were completely destroyed and 7 more suffered some degree of damage. The outpouring of donations from our communities and local government were initially encouraging. Cabo County Government immediately promised to replace the homes that were completely lost. But that still leaves seven families whose homes are damaged to some degree.Past Rotary President Josefina Ruiz who grew up in Santiago is working with the Santiago leadership, and has been able to create a list of what is currently needed. But however accurate a list is today, it’s always out of date tomorrow. Every day brings another shortage we were unprepared for. Each day brings us closer to a return to the comfort and security these families once knew and will again with your help. As more private sector donations and government assistance arrive, we will still have to address new needs on a daily basis.With the fire less serious than was first reported, Club Rotario has stepped up and taken the lead in providing services and goods needed for the people and homes in distress. A local neighbor and ReMax realtor, Mike Dahl, has created a GOFUNDME account so anyone can contribute to this humanitarian cause. They are plumbers, electricians and mechanics. I am taking donations for the brothers to be able to buy tools to get back to work and support their families.  Would you help? Also, a young man of the same family lost his computer that he needs to work with as well.
