  1.   New Billfish Release Research Rule: It’s the new Billfish “30-seconds to release” rule: The latest research just published to assure billfish success is to release billfish within 30 seconds of being caught. After examining their post-fight recovery, research show it can take as much as eight hours for a billfish to fully recover after a fight, even longer for a larger fish and a more strenuous fight. And sometimes they succumb. And if there’s a shark or Orca – their primary predators, they are toast. When we reward our anglers with a photo of their marlin by pulling them onto the boat and then releasing after a photo, we MUST BE SURE to have the fish out of the water for no more than 30 seconds!  The Billfish Foundation, created in 1986 by conservationists led by Winthrop Rockefeller, they used their fortunes to promote and protect billfish worldwide. The Billfish Foundation’s keystone initiative was introduced in 1990 with a first ever “Catch & Release” program to protect and perpetuate the species. The East Cape strongly joined this effort 20 years ago and, in my estimation, we are a leading global example of how to protect and preserve our fishery by releasing billfish in the East Cape.
