c.  The wind season has begun!  November 1-7 brought us 5 out of 7 days of wind.
Sunday and Monday warm winds blew from the north at a steady 15-20knts.  Tuesday and Wednesday were perfect for paddleboarding and fishing.  Winds returned lighter on Thursday, blowing a puffy 10-15knts, but students were on the water and happy with the gentle conditions.  Friday and Saturday winds switched 180 degrees and blew from the south so ExotiKite Kiteboarding packed up their instructors and students and headed out to the beautiful East Cape where the winds were well over 25knts on Saturday.  The week we are looking forward to windy conditions Monday and Tuesday with it dropping off to lighter winds the rest of the week.  We expect the north wind pattern to begin to take hold for the rest of the season.

a. If you haven’t left yet, here are some tips for navigating your way down the Baja. Google Maps can provide you with navigation through the entire peninsula even in spots without cell coverage. But, you need to download the maps ahead of your planned trip. Unfortunately you can’t download the entire segment in one batch. The downloads are accomplished through their “off line maps” secretly hiding in preferences. Open Google Maps and look in the top right corner (Apple and Android are the same.) Touch the circle in that upper right corner, drop down to off line maps. Select route segments that match your planned trip and start the downloads before you depart your WiFi. I also find it handy to name the blocks of download and I do overlap the maps. I also use this same technique for my local travel areas in the US. It speeds up navigating since you don’t have to wait for the cell data to update maps during your trip. By the way, your phone has a built-in GPS that is not reliant on cell data. So when you are in the middle of “nowhere Baja”, the phone will provide you location and navigation.

For our trips we use the Life 360 app which works on Fruit Phones and Android. It sends your location information to folks that would love to track your progress. They also need to have the Live 360 app. If you’re worried about location privacy, you can turn off the location tracking when not needed. thecomputerguy@usa.com

b.  Sad News: Charlie Hampton made famous by Charlie’s Chocolates passed away on October 6th with his family by his side.  Charlie was a hard working man who suffered a near fatal fall six stories in a previous life with his successful window washing business.  After being told he would never walk again, Charlie rose to the task and never looked back.  He came to Los Barriles with lots of ideas and diligently made one work.  His chocolate business made him a household name, one that will be sweetly remembered.  Rest in Peace Charlie.

REPORT: October 25-31, we had a true El Norte blow with winds reaching over 25 knots on Tuesday/Wednesday, then dropping to around 18 knots on Thursday and Friday.  The high winds brought huge waves that pounded the shores making for excellent kitesurfing and spectating. As the winds mellowed out, lessons got under way, as inspired students took advantage of the calm seas and steady winds.  The forecast is showing light to no wind this upcoming week.  Perfect time to take advantage of wing foiling lessons or our stand up paddle boarding rental, tours or yoga!

FISHING REPORT

a.  The Bisbee’s Black and Blue Breaks Two Records!  The most awaited, richest fishing tournament in the world reached an unprecedented, record-breaking, staggering $4.6 Million Dollar Jackpot! Unfortunately, it also broke a different record. There were NO winners! Yup, on the first day of the tourney two marlins made it to the weighing scale but didn’t reach the minimum weight of 300 lbs. to qualify. On the second and third days of fishing, there were also no qualifying marlins. Bummer! The monies paid will either be returned or kept as registration & jackpots for next year. According to the USAD website https://www.aphis.usda.gov/aphis/pet-travel/by-country/pettravel-mexico an International Health Certificate is no longer required, and has been replaced with:  “Upon arrival to Mexico with the pet dog(s) and/or cat(s) in a clean cage(s)/carrier(s), travelers must visit the Mexican Animal and Plant Health Inspection Office (OISA), to contact the official personnel working with SENASICA.”  Has anyone gone through this new process at San Ysidro? Please advise of your experience and what I should expect. I’ll be bringing two older chihuahuas and one older cat. a.  Crossed in Mexicali Thursday 15th and arrived in La Ribera Friday the 16th.  Hwy 5 is in excellent condition other than San Felipe Proper. Hwy 1 was also in good shape. b.  Today (October 17), traveling south, about 3-5 miles south of Guerrero Negro we were caught in a Federal Police speed trap. Granted we were not going the posted 80kph. The Federal Police were parked perpendicular to the highway with lights flashing and Officer Morales was on the highway signalling us to stop. There was no evidence of a radar camera. He pointed out that the posted signs were in kph not mph. He asked my husband to step out of the car and to provide the registration for the car and his drivers license. He informed him that the ticket would cost $4500 pesos, but we could contribute to the Police Assistance League for $2000 pesos. We did not see any other Federal Police beyond this point.
