Thursday, October 14, 2021 – #4305

Sad News- Robert A (Bob) Bloomfield took his last flight surrounded by family on Oct 8th in Eagle,Idaho.He was 97 years young, and his mind and spirit were with him to the very end. Bob was a part time resident of LB, on the hill at Verdugo’s with honors, for the fact that he had spent many Springs on the sea wall in the mid 70’s there, before there were hotels on the site. He eventually wound up at his beach front palapa at Costa Brava, where he welcomed all with his hospitality and treasured Margaritas. Bob was a decorated Navy fighter pilot, having flown over 250 missions in the S Pacific during WWII, having received 3 Distinguished Flying Crosses.  Born and raised on the east coast, Bob migrated to Sun Valley, Idaho in 1972,  where he was a cowboy, hunter,back country pilot, golfer and father to his 7 children, grandfather to 13, and great grandfather to 6.
Bob was a fabulous story teller, and his sense of humor was second to none. He was a fixture at Otro Vez for Monday night football, an avid reader, and a great Bridge player. He flipped burgers at the big art fair for many years, and made many Baja friends during his many winters there. He will be missed. DISCUSSIONS – ANSWERS – ANNOUNCEMENT

1. Cell Phones – Season 1 Episode 3. I hate to read stories of lost cell phones. If you can’t find your cell, there are some steps to take immediately. If you have a Fruit Phone (excuse me, an Iphone), go to any computer and search for “Find My Iphone”. You will need to sign-in with your Icloud credentials (aka. Itunes or Apple screen name and passcode). As long as your lost phone has a charge and a data connection, you can see where the phone happens to be. If you suspect that it’s stolen, you can use that same site to “brick” the phone (disable it). If you have an android phone, search for “Find my Android Phone”. Same procedures apply. If you are in the Apple system, you can buy an Apple Air Tag to attach to the phone. That will help you located the phone using Bluetooth. If you are out of Bluetooth range, anyone else who comes within range will report the location to you. Come to think of it, that might work on your expensive ATV/UTV.
   
   You probably have a lot of important photos on your phone. I highly recommend that you install Google Photos and/or Amazon Photo. Those sites will back up your photos for free. If you loose your phone, you will always have your pictures.
   
   On the drive south I use an app called Life360. That allows select friends to monitor my progress as long as I have a data connection. Your friends can opt out of the GPS tracking but I feel better knowing that someone knows where to find me. Life360 works on Apple or Android. 1. S.N.A.P. (spay, neuter and prevention) UPDATE: We hope everyone had a cool, pleasant summer and anxious to head South to Los Barriles area for the Fall of 2021 Season. Please remember to bring assorted sizes of collars/leashes for S.N.A.P. so we can give each pet we ‘fix’ a new collar to help identify which dogs have been fixed, in most cases. From January 1, until today, Oct. 10, 2021, we have fixed 625 pets in our area with more on the waiting list for Silvia and me to pick up and take to Dr. Christobal, Clinica Veterinaria in Buenos Aires -6121414261, for sterilization and then deliver them safely to their owners OR pet owners can take their pet directly to Dr. Christobal and we will pay for their spay or neuter operation. 1. Cell phones in Mexico Chapter 2. For those of you who missed Chapter 1, all US cell phones have contracts with the three providers in Baja: TelCel, Telefonica and ATT Mexico. The US cell providers contract tower time with those three Mexican companies. Now back to Chapter 2. Your reception in Los Barriles or anywhere in the world is dependent on your proximity and line of sight to the Cell Towers. In LB, those towers are located in the huge palm tree downtown, the tower at La Curva and one on the road from LB to San Bartolo. Some companies sell range extenders that require an externally mounted antenna and a signal amplifier. It’s been my experience they do little to improve reception. Another factor that affects reception is the quality of the phone and the number of radio frequencies installed. Most midlevel to premium phones will work well in LB. There are a couple of cell phone apps that may help as well. I have used Skype for years on my cell phone with great success. Skype even works well with DSL internet. Another option is the Talkatone App. With Talkatone you use WiFi for calls and texts. That would include internet access from the internet and mobile data. Cost is about $5 per month. You do get a phone number that will allow calls in and out with texting. Talkatone can be used with an Ipad as well as a phone. Remember if the person on the other end can’t hear you, it’s a problem with your upstream bandwidth, common with a DSL connection (TelMex). thecomputerguy@usa.com

Sad News: Sylvia Ossa, everyone’s favorite reflexology practitioner, went to join the angels, September 23, 2021 at her home in Sedona, AZ after suffering a stroke.
She was entertaining and described herself on FB as:
•       “I’ve always been crazy, its kept me from going insane!” …. The Eagles
•       “Our first teacher is our own heart”….. Cheyenne Words
•       “Love is all there is” ….The Beatles
She was a gifted reflexology practitioner and worked in the Baja since about 2006.  Her life was full of adventure, and she lived many different lives in her time on the earth.   She loved coming to Los Barriles and loved her furry children…. her two dogs.  She will be missed by her friends and clients – most of whom became her friends. She is now so soaring with the angels and loving the freedom!!!

4. Beginning Oct 24 this year all calls in the US must include all ten digits. On that date, 988 will be reserved for the Suicide Prevention Hotline. Beginning soon this year and extending over the next year, the Cellular 3G network will begin to disappear in the US. Some older phones and services in cars that use the 3G network will no longer work. If your cell phone has a handcrank, it will no longer work.

This time of year there are many questions about cell service in Mexico and “will my cell phone work in Baja.” There are two major providers in Baja, TelCel and Telefonica, followed by ATT Mexico. All of these carriers have sharing contracts with the carriers in the US. Will your Verizon phone work in Baja, yes provided you have made arrangements before you leave the US.

As we get older, our hearing begins to lack the clarity that we once had. Even those folks who have good hearing may also benefit from a good soundbar. Over the past couple of years, the TV manufacturers have reduced the size of the bezel (plastic frame) around the TV. In order to do that, they have placed the speaker behind the TV. And, they don’t give us the best speakers possible. The content providers have begun to switch from the stereo format to forms of suround sound. They record the left and right channels as normal but they move the voices to the center channel. If you have the old stereo setup the voices will not be as clear. I highly recommend tht you purchase a 3.1, 5.1 or 7.1 system. The important number is the odd whole number. The .1 is the subwoofer. The 3.1 gives stereo with the center voice channel. The 5.1 adds the rear ambient sound and the 7.1 bounces sound off the ceiling so you can feel the helicopter hovering overhead. I have several sets of Vizio sound bars that are just great and economically priced.
