DISCUSSIONS – ANSWERS – ANNOUNCEMENTS

  1.   So i’d like to share my travel day to abbotsford, b. c. canada from lb. filled out “arrivecan”. in los barrilles. went to my appointment at east cape medical and got my result in about an hour.(1800 clams/90 usd) left lb at 2:00 then picked up a rescue  dog. we have a dog so now we’re transporting 2. behind immigration was th “do check”landed in seattle. overnight at the raddison. back to the airport for our rapid test at the airport. results in 30. ($196 usd each). friends picked us up at the raddison and drove us to the huntington  crossing. took about 2 hours to get us and the dogs processed like the clampets we hauled our stuff to the Canadian side to find out we needed to have downloaded “ switch health “. got tested there and told to do another test (given a kit) in 8 days in front of a nurse on zoom. could take hours. by getting our first test done at huntington we saved hours waiting for a nurse on zoom at home. we had been told we needed “mobile pass”&“verifly”. didn’t need them. hope this helps someone’s trip go smoothly – rossscanlon@shaw.ca

  3. I brought down a rebuilt laptop for the east cape guild to give to a student that needs it. It cost me $160.00 to have it rebuilt. Wouldn’t it be great if everyone did that with a laptop that was slowing down? It can change a life for so many. However I am not sure how it will work for a Spanish speaking person. Any thoughts about that? Robin Lester, jrlester@live.com. I plan on talking to my IT person and bring more in the fall.

  2. The small but mighty ‘Cultivar’ group is growing! We are creating a garden plus after school curriculum called “Learn, Grow, Eat, Go” based on the junior master gardener program from Texas A & M University. We hope to inspire the children in our community to grow and eat their own vegetables. We have talented volunteer folks that bring their unique gardening, design and management skills as well as folks who bring their enthusiasm and are want to help. Julie Marks has committed a piece of property for the Cultivar project. Sten and Susan Thorborg purchased the 25’ x 40’ Cultivar Grow Tunnel. Dave Ahlers is our Project Manager and has designed the garden beds for the growing tunnel and lot layout including outdoor classroom, bathroom and water supply. Fabiola Rodriguez, the deeply knowledgeable Community Liaison and Garden Master for the Costa Palmas Development is our consultant. We want to be ready to grow when the children return to school in the fall following the hot summer months. Now, we need 460 concrete 8” sized blocks for our raised garden beds! Are you building a house? Do you have a relationship with your builder and could ask them to donate blocks? Do you love our community and kids and would simply like to donate? Any or all will be helpful toward our goal. If you are in town, you may drop a peso donation off to the block factory ‘para el Cultivar proyecto’ across the street from Baja’s Awesome Beach Rides. What else do we need to grow our success? Hand tools, rakes, shovels, hoses, garden supplies. You can drop those to Cultivar at East Cape Recycling & Environment Education headquarter at Baja’s Resort at East Cape. Thinking of something bigger? We need a bathroom and have solar planned to operate our watering systems. Please contact Theresa Comber theresa@bajasawesome.com for donations, other questions or want to help? dave@sunlightandtrees.com

  5. Friends, supporters and family of Cortez Rescue: We desperately need your help! Summer is coming fast and these poor pups will have a hell of a time surviving summer at Cortez. We have many, many litters(18)& solo puppies plus A LOT of dogs so we have no room to help others! Our shelter is full and our fosters are full(yes, we always need more foster homes ) But what we really need is help getting all these rescue pups adopted! And that’s where we are hoping you can help! 2. Please share Cortez Rescue & Outreach Facebook page & website: www.cortezrescue.org with your network(social media is very powerful), with your family, with your friends, with everyone…as you never know who will see our rescues & will want to adopt(or foster or foster to adopt). Please consider picking a pup to sponsor all the way to adoption. Visit our website, pick a pup & show your friends & family…be a part of a finding a pup it’s forever family. magine if 125 people each dedicated themselves to getting just ONE Cortez Rescue pup adopted, we could empty Cortez Rescue together There are many dogs waiting in the wings for our help but we just can’t help anymore; we are at a very critical point for weeks now and we are all so saddened by this. We work hard on all aspects of rescue every day, all day, to do our best to avoid getting to this point but during these desperate times, it has all caught up to us. There are so many in and so many waiting to get it…Many injured and now recovering, abused, neglected, abandoned, dumped and surrendered puppies & dogs of all ages and in all different conditions. We know we have the love & support of our wonderful community and we even help all our surrounding communities; we are asking that you participate actively in helping spread the word about our wonderful doggies. Please, it only takes minutes to tag friends & family, to share our page and website, to write up your own post about Cortez Rescue, to copy & paste us to groups or on other pages & walls. escue work is hard and never-ending! Our amazing volunteers are so dedicated to our Baja pups that you would be AMAZED at the lengths they go to show up day after day- to walk, play and socialize all the dogs regardless how busy their lives are, the time of year, and the work involved with training & even rehabilitating some ‘harder to rehome’ dogs. These men and women are tirelessly helping because they truly love & care about ALL dogs. Info@cortezrescue.org www.cortezrescue.org

  3. For several weeks our area in Las Brisas north of town has been experiencing serious CFE electric fluctuations. The incoming voltage drops so low that our water pump will not work.  It has protection to prevent it from failing or burning up.   Your lights may be ok but things like the toaster and microwave don’t work.  That is minor compared with not being able to use your water storage. We do not have a generator but those that do have seen them running nearly 24/7. We have called the CFE trouble number which is 071..you can request English and you need your service number off your CFE bill.  They have been out twice but the problem has not been resolved and keeps escalating. I am  asking how many areas are experiencing this also? Are you reporting it or do you have any suggestion that might help in this very serious situation? Please post here or perhaps on Everything Los Barriles. jleemelter@icloud.com   624 142 8123.

EVENTS

  1.  The following is my horror story in travelling to Canada: I was vaccinated and passed all the required molecular tests before traveling. After undergoing a Covid test within 72 hours of my departure from La Paz Baja California Sur, Mexico, I arrived at the Montreal Airport (YUL) on May 2, 2021 at 11:30 PM, I did not sleep during 36 hours.
    I followed the government’s requirements for returning from travel by air. I booked an authorized government hotel, the Baymont by Wyndham Montreal Aéroport at 6755 Chemin de la Cote-de-Liesse, Saint Laurent, Québec, H4T 1S5.
    I looked at the photos on the website and phoned. By choosing this authorized hotel, I trusted the government to ensure that the hotel, met its criteria of SAFETY and HYGIENE.

    Because of restrictions I had to fly La Paz—Mexico city—sleep in Mexico city—next day fly with Delta to Atlanta, 2 hour layover and then fly to Montreal….flight delayed 1.5 hour. At arrival did immigration and customs, the was directed to a place where they performed another test by again shoving a stick up my nose…then directed to were the hotel bus would pick me up. After almost an hour of waiting at the hotel reception, I was assigned room 244 upstairs, it was 1:15 am. I asked if there was an elevator to go upstairs, the answer: “NO”; because of my age (80) and an accident during my military service, (I am a veteran) I cannot use stairs without risk of falling and ESPECIALLY NOT TO GO UP with a suitcase in an narrow twisted staircase… one of the other guests (prisoner) helped me.

    Upon my arrival in the room I noticed that the place was not clean and without proper air ventilation.
    1.- Furniture had glass stains;
    2.- Telephone and alarm had not been cleaned;
    3.- Floor covered by a carpet, IT IS KNOWN: Carpets are not suitable for a germ-free environment;
    4.- Stained chamber doors;
    5.- Air conditioner that also serves as a heater, filled with dust and very dirty;
    6.- No adequate air ventilation;
    7.- Stained smoke detector;
    8.- Toilet bowl seat not the right one for the bowl;
    9.- Inadequate and dangerous electrical system due to lack of sockets and use of extensions;
    10.- In the event of a fire in the corridor, no means of exiting through a window which is double worm;
    11.- No microwave to warm up the bad meals provided;
    12.- No government representatives (provincial and federal) on site and no way to reach a representative by telephone.

    I had followed the government’s instructions with confidence, that in the context of Covid-19, the highest hygiene and disinfection conditions but, I did not receive the protections that I was required to receive and was at risk of getting sick. I assess having put my health at risk more than if I had been send directly at home. In addition to not receiving the protective measures that were to accompany my stay, I paid 888.99 Dlls for a pig pen and food unfit for pigs.
    The meals were less nothealthy. After having been assigned a room at about 1:30 AM I requested food…was given a cold chicken leg which had not been cooked enough, the next morning a takeout bag was left at my door, two white bread slices, one slice of cheese, one small orange juice, lunch was a chicken leg and corn form a can…so me and the girl next door decided to call for food, at our own expenses.

    After two nights I received an e-mail at around 3 AM that the test was negative so I moved out. The taxi tried to take me for a ride…So 12 days of quarantine, The 8th day test using a kit I received at the airport: First you need to contact a company, register and they tell you a nurse will phone.
    The day passed,,,next morning phoned again…the phone number on file was not correct…nothing….phone again was told they could not reach me because the system does not permit long distance phone…finally at 3:30 AM fixed the SHYPE system on my laptop…so on the 11th a nurse reached me, the test was taken…next day phoned the company for pickup. Now must wait for the results …
    If the gestapo (police) come and I am not alone home…3000 dlls fine..
    Welcome to Canada. – jebeddy2012@hotmail.com

2. Local Water problems!

Here are some notes from Monday’s  somewhat sudden meeting with congressional candidate Eduardo Yayo on local water problems.  It was a constructive meeting!

There were about 25 in attendance, including a large group from Palo Blanco. If you’re interested in getting involved in creating solutions, which seemed to be the direction the group is heading in, message Robin Neal with your email address.

Los Barriles Water Meeting re problems north of town, run by Eduardo Yayo for congress

Yayo works in the government in La Paz, has some relevant experience, but no direct responsibility. He does see a need for connecting the expat communities with government and wants to be a bridge.

According to a study he referred to, BCS is expected to be the first or second state to run out of water in 15-20 years unless something is done. It was not clear what he meant by “run out of water.”

At Magdalena Bay they didn’t have water or light. Yayo was involved with a project in which they installed desalination with solar in the town, providing both water and light for about 400 people.

Rick Johnson, local resident, who has lots of experience in constructing sewer and water projects: A sewer system would save 60% of water. We need a whole new water system going north from town. He can see 20 leaks along any given line up there and those are the ones that rise to the surface. We need an 8” line, plastic, that can expand under pressure and doesn’t leak, along with all the subsidiary lines.

Jeanne Harkleroad recommends making a plan, as they did for the new athletic field. That project took 4 years,  coordinating between the mayors of LB and La Paz. Almost complete.

Mike (Connor?) has sat on sewer boards and water boards. Said that it took over ten years just to build the LB fountain, but seemed hopeful about getting to work on this project, as were others.

Someone suggested a surtax just to cover the water improvement.

La Paz is supposed to give 50% of tax back to Los B. That has been the intention, anyway. Right now they’re updating the computers. They need to have a system connected to track all the money. Can’t accept money from us that isn’t accounted for through that system.

Steve Burgin said we’d probably have to set up a Mexican nonprofit. Otherwise the money will disappear in La Paz.

Brittany: We wait 1 hour now for an ambulance. Inexcusable. Many have died on the way to the hospital.

There is a great team in La Paz, (name Calafia?) but they’re funded by foreign money and there’s leadership, that’s what we need here. If MX can’t do it, we’ll do it ourselves.

Yayo says a lot of equipment that has been donated like ambulances, etc, are sitting neglected because there’s no organization, no leadership.

Marta from Palo Blanco commented: It’s all getting worse. Water is worse, garbage collection is worse. If you (Yayo) want to connect with this community, these problems have to be solved.

Robin Neal observed that we have a lot of skills in our community. We need workgroups to focus on garbage, water, etc. She suggested we start organizing and planning. That got a lot of agreement so an email list was circulated. There was substantial Interest in getting to work.

What about you? Want water? Services? We may have to make this happen ourselves. If you’re interested in working on a water project, garbage collection project, an ambulance project, a sewer project, or anything else you think needs doing, please send your email address to Robin Agajanian-Neal at yobaby426@yahoo.com
