Baja Night Sky - Wednesday, March 20,
2013: Spring is here. Around 4am this morning, the sun
crossed the celestial equator, the imaginary line in the
sky over our terrestrial equator, as our orbit around the
sun turned Earth's axis from pointing away from the sun to
slowly pointing directly at it by the summer solstice in
June. If you are accustomed to the first day of Spring
falling on March 21, it won't happen again until well into
the next century. While most centennial years, i.e., 1700 ,
1800, 1900, 2100, are not leap years, 2000 was since it is
divisible by 400. The extra day that year will cause the
vernal equinox to fall on March 19 or 20 for more than 100
years. About 6:24am this morning, the Sun rose almost
exactly in the east. If the Pacific Ocean is your western
horizon, the sun will set almost exactly in the west, but
behind local mountain ranges it will be slightly south of
due west tonight. With longer days, the comet is becoming
fainter. I couldn't find it Monday evening. It may be as
rare as a comet for someone to return to the concert
stage after an absence of more than 40 years, but it
happened in El Triunfo Sunday when Christian Schleifer gave
his first formal piano concert in as many years. He opened
with a moving interpretation of Old Man River,
followed by a tender All The Things You Are. The
tempo changed unexpectedly with a rhythmic and romantic
Bolero by Consuela
Velázquez, the famous and most recorded Spanish song
in the world, Béseme Mucho. For the next 45 minutes,
a packed theater of enthusiastic listeners enjoyed the
music of Gershwin, Kern, Rogers, and Bernstein among other
composers. Visitors can look forward to an expanding
repertoire of classical, Latin, popular and Broadway music.
If you are in the vicinity of El Triunfo Thursday through
Sunday between 10am to 2pm, stop by the Museo de la
Musica for a guided tour, and performance by
Christian. Tom S.

We want to reassure any that the
crossing South at San Ysidro is a piece of cake. Easiest in 25
years! Simply always stay to the right until you make the choice of
Playas or Scenic Highway then it is a left. Very well signed and
clear lines. (Middle lane for airport; left lane for center of
Tijuana)
Traffic was very light on Sunday. Crossed the the border with not
even a peek at our full truck at 5AM and checked into our motel at
San Ignacio at 4:30pm. Mainly good pavement.Maryolive &Dale Shoupe
