Fundraiser for Max: For those of
you out there who know Max, he works at Chapito's and also drives
around selling tamales and empanadas, and now he could use a little
help from the community. He was scheduled for eye surgery in Obregon
which was going to be financially difficult for him, but then a week
before the surgery he was driving the road to nowhere in a borrowed
car because his car had died, did not see a pot hole because of his
vision problems, hit the hole and slammed into the cliff side. Max
hurt his hand very badly (possibly broken) and the borrowed 4 runner
has its front end banged up. We are hoping to raise money to help
Max and his family through this time. If you can help, please bring
your contribution to the East Cape Casas & RV Resort office and they

When traveling, most of us do
not bring along our document scanners. However there are smartphone
applications which utilize your phone's high-resolution camera to
photograph documents and save them as multi-page pdf files. My
personal favorite is Genius Scan, an application for iOS or Android
or Windows phones. The resolution is more than adequate for printed
documents, with provisions for saving as black and white, grayscale
or color. Also, sheetfed scanners cannot handle books (unless you
want to remove the pages), but this app works great for capturing

BAJA NIGHT SKY #68 for
January 4/5, 2015. (1) A Full Moon (99.6%) will rise about 5:42pm
Sunday. Monday, at 98.7% full, the moon will rise around 6:34pm. (2)
The Roman Gods, Mercury, Venus, and Mars, sparkle in the western sky
after sunset during January evenings this year. Look for them around
6:30pm (Venus & Mercury set by 7pm). Most city dwellers have never
seen Mercury, closest planet to the Sun; the next few weeks offer
the best chance this year. Mercury is below brilliant Venus. They
will move even closer during the week. Two fists above them is the
red planet Mars. (3) After 9:30-10pm, look for Jupiter rising in the
east, and Sirius low in the southeast beneath Orion, and the Winter
Circle of bright stars. Can you find them all by moving clockwise
from Sirius (Procyon, Pollux/Castor, Capella, Aldebaran, Rigel)? The
Big Dipper is rising in the northeast. (4) For brave souls up by
5:30-6am, Saturn is rising above red Antares, brightest star in
Scorpius in the southeast. Other bright stars in the pre-dawn
eastern sky are Vega, Arcturus, and Spica. (5) A reader reported a
bright "liquid fireball" falling from the sky last month over
Campamento, a great description of a larger-than-normal Gemini
meteor burning itself out in the upper atmosphere. On December 30, a
group in Cerritos watched a comet-like object move eastward across
the southern sky for 30 minutes beginning at 7:30pm. Did anyone else

a. Re: paying property taxes online
In an earlier posting I asked for info on how to pay property taxes
online, as we used to do. Subsequent to that posting I had an
exchange with the tax office and learned that the only way to pay
online is with a Mexican credit card, e.g., Banorte, Banamex, or
Bancomer. And it must be after January 2. So it’s back to standing
in line for many of us.

at San Luis and taking Mexico 40 South cutting over to Mexico 5 to
San Felipe than preceding South to Chapala on Hwy. 1. Some friends
recommended crossing at Mexicali, I understand there is about 39 k,
of gravel enroute. We are traveling in a 4x4 P.U. We. are not new to
the Baja but I have never traveled that way. There appears to be a
hotel and gas at Altonsina. I would sure like to hear from some one
who has made the trip. I also would like to stop in San Carlos area
to pick up sea food. Any suggestion on where to stay and what to do
